Campus Forum on CivilityNovember 12, 2010 at 2:30–4:30 p.m.
To: Gustavus students, faculty, and staff
From: Provost and Dean of the College David Fienen and Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Jeffrey Stocco
We invite you to participate in a campus discussion on Friday, Nov. 12, from 2:30 " 4:30 p.m., Heritage Room in the Jackson Campus Center. Civility will be the focus of our conversation, with presentations and responses focused on three of the College's core values: community, justice, and faith.
Our question is how can we, as a College that values:
Community, support and respect each other, given our diverse opinions and attitudes? Jeff Stocco, Dean of Students, will comment on students' responsibilities and rights as well as standards of our community.
Faith, support each other in our faith journey and respect each other when our particular faith journeys are quite different? Darrell Jodock, Professor of Religion and the Drell and Adeline Bernhardson Distinguished Professor in Lutheran Studies, has agreed to address how our faith traditions inform this conversation.
Justice, support each other in our right to express our opinions while at the same time recognizing the rights of others and maintaining respect for each other even when we disagree? Kate Knutson, Assistant Professor of Political Science, will offer her perspective on free speech as it is expressed and challenged on a college campus.
The format calls for three short presentations, discussion among the panelists, followed by questions from those in attendance. In addition, we expect to come away from this conversation with ideas for the future, including the possibility of further campus conversation about more specific topics.
