Dr. John Person, '02, will speak at the annual George Hall Lecture at 6:30 pm on Thursday, May 9, in the President's Dining Room. Dr. Person's talk is titled "From Gustavus to the Study of Fascism" and is free and open to the public.
Dr. John Person received his B.A. from Gustavus in 2002, majoring in Religion and International Management. Dr. Person went on to do graduate work in East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago, receiving his Ph.D. in 2012. His dissertation focused on 20th century Japanese philosophy in the context of Japanese nationalism. Following a prestigious post-doctoral fellowship at UCLA's Paul I. and Hisako Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies from 2012-2013, Dr. Person joined the Department of East Asian Studies at the State University of New York at Albany in 2014, and is currently Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies.
Dr. Person's scholarly works include translations of important intellectual figures in Japan as well as a number of journal articles and conference presentations. He is currently preparing a manuscript for publication on Japanese intellectual history, tentatively titled, Philosophizing Japan: The Genri Nippon Society and Interwar Right Wing.
