Description

Gustavus alumnus, former employee, and longtime Saint Peter community member Anders Björling '58 died on Monday, June 6, at the age of 86.

Anders' father, Jussi Björling, was the world-famous opera singer from Borlänge, Sweden after whom our campus recital hall is named. Raised primarily in Sweden, Anders came to the United States to attend Gustavus as a student, graduating in 1958 with a degree in business and economics. After graduation, he and his first wife, Janet '58, lived in Sweden for four years before returning to the Minnesota River Valley and opening Swedish Kontur in downtown Saint Peter. Anders served in a variety of roles at the College, including as comptroller in the finance office, from 1962 to 1998.

Known as an accomplished photographer and lover of Swedish culture, Anders leaves a long and distinguished legacy as a member of the Saint Peter business community. To this day, visitors travel long distances to shop at Swedish Kontur, which is one of the oldest retail importers of Nordic products in the United States.

Anders is survived by his wife, Judith; his children Susanne Heim '83, Jennifer Björling, and Lisa Grant; and his son in laws, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15 in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus campus, with visitation beginning at 12 p.m. All are welcome to attend in celebration of the life of Anders Björling and his family's rich legacy on campus and in our local community.
