Climate Justice: Unearthing the Climate Crisis as an Issue of Human Suffering

In its 25th year as an organization, Building Bridges will confront climate justice and its wide scope of intersections. The conference, titled “Climate Justice: Unearthing the Climate Crisis as an Issue of Human Suffering” will be held on Saturday March 7, 2020 beginning at 9:00 AM in Christ Chapel. The goal of the conference is to understand how climate change is rooted in systems of oppression that reinforce injustice on a global scale. We intend to illuminate perspectives that are under acknowledged in a climate debate that tends to prioritize profit over justice.

The conference offers a wide variety of opportunities for engagement. To begin, the conference will feature two keynote addresses delivered by David Archambault II (Lakota: Tokala Ohitika), former tribal Chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota, and Nnimmo Bassey, director of the ecological think-tank, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) with head office in Benin City, Nigeria. Following these keynote addresses will be a workshop series, an interpretive walkthrough, and an active reflection.

We invite you to join us as we reorient the climate conversation to emphasize ways that injustice pervade climate change. Our hope is that we leave the conference feeling inspired and equipped to holistically engage in climate activism and dismantle systems that legitimize discrimination.
