2007 Rydell ProfessorshipFeaturing S. James Gates
Gates is the John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2005, Gates presented at the College’s Nobel Conference on “The Legacy of Einstein,” where he gave a lecture titled “Is Cosmic Concordance in Concomitance with Superstring/M-Theory?”
He returned to Gustavus during spring semester 2007 under the auspices of the Robert E. and Susan T. Rydell Professorship.
Gates co-taught a course entitled “Superstring/M-theory: The DNA of Reality?” He said, “My idea is that this really is a course for nonphysicists, principally, that would use the example of string theory to give the students insights into how fundamental theoretical science works.”
He presented a public lecture entitled "SUSY & The Lords of the Ring."
