On Wednesday, April 19, 2006, Gustavus Adolphus College hosted its 26th annual MAYDAY! Peace Conference on the college campus. The conference is devoted each year to a different topic relating to human rights and social justice; the theme for 2006 was "AIDS in Africa: The Unfolding Crisis."

The daylong conference featured presentations from eminent scientist Dr. Robert Gallo, director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, who is credited with identifying HIV as the infectious agent responsible for AIDS, and professor Marjorie Mbilinyi, a social activist from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, who writes and speaks on women's concerns, education, AIDS, and politics.

An afternoon forum also took place, with presenters from the Minnesota AIDS Project, a parish nursing program in Swaziland, South Africa, and the Office of Senator Mark Dayton.
