JOB SUMMARY: The primary purpose of this position is to support the teaching staff by purchasing, preparing and organizing labs and ensuring equipment, chemicals and supplies are available as needed. The Stockroom Coordinator also supports research faculty and students who need chemicals and related supplies for their work. This position ensures proper safety protocols are followed in the Chemical Stockroom, storage areas and preparation rooms. Thus, this position works in close collaboration with the Chemical Hygiene and Lab Safety Officer to ensure best practices in safety, maintenance, and inventory control.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Laboratory Preparation Duties
- Laboratory preparation for first- and second-year chemistry laboratory courses. May extend to other courses on occasion.
- Accurately prepare solutions for laboratory experiments as needed.
- Set up and take down hardware, equipment, and chemical reagents for experiments.
- Keep records of laboratory samples, including unknowns.
- Stock student laboratory drawers, including distribution of drawer inventory sheets to laboratory students at the beginning of the semester.
- Maintain adequate chemical waste containers in chemistry department teaching and research labs.
- Laboratory preparation for first- and second-year chemistry laboratory courses. May extend to other courses on occasion.
- Maintain cryogen levels in instruments.
- Chemical and Gas Tank Inventory Maintenance & Reporting Duties
- Enter and bar-code all chemicals into the chemical database
- Order, maintain, track, and do regular inventory of all gas tanks (for research or teaching)
- Reconcile chemical and gas tank inventory twice per year.
- Keep safety records of chemicals and equipment up to date.
- Complete government reporting.
- Shelve chemicals and monitor that gas tanks are in appropriate, safe locations, which includes periodic monitoring to ensure safe storage and collaboration with the Chemical Hygiene and Lab Safety Coordinator to ensure best practices.
- Equipment Inventory and Maintenance
- Enter and bar-code all departmental-purchased capital and small equipment into equipment inventory database and reconcile annually.
- Oversee the maintenance of laboratory capital and small equipment.
- Track serial numbers, warranties, repair and maintenance logs for balances and small equipment in the department.
- Coordinate annual balance calibration
- Maintain laboratory key and lock combination files.
- Collaborate with the Chemical Hygiene and Lab Safety Officer to coordinate inventory and safety related maintenance
- Purchase and receive chemicals and supplies for teaching and research labs.
- Obtain, review, and compare quotes from vendors for departmental orders.
- Place orders throughout the year, including a large summer order.
- Receive and unpack shipments, cross-check shipments/packing slips/order for accuracy, check items for breakage, and shelve and inventory received items.
- Follow up with vendors for missing items, return of inaccurate or broken items, and invoice issues.
- Demonstrate effective stewardship of department resources.
- Maintain records of purchases and reconcile/annotate credit card statements.
- Chemical Safety
- Ensure that safety data sheets are available online.
- Maintain appropriate lab safety signage in the department
- Collaborate with campus chemical hygiene staff to coordinate hazardous waste disposal
- Ensure appropriate safety equipment is available in laboratories and preparation rooms
- Serve on the Chemical Hygiene and Lab Safety Advisory Council and other campus committees related to safety when appropriate.
- Supervisory Duties
- Supervise and train undergraduate stockroom assistants, including safety training, proper chemical handling, proper cleaning techniques., equipment set-up, etc.
- All other relevant and appropriate duties as assigned.
Prerequisites
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of college chemistry
- Basic knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry
- Basic knowledge of safe handling and disposal of laboratory chemicals
- Ability to use spreadsheet and data-management software
- Experience in preparation of reagents and instrumentation for laboratory experiments
- Organizational skills
- Ability to work on a team
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related field
- Experience in inventory control
- Familiarity with common chemical research instrumentation.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Position requires regular hours to align with semester lab schedule, which may include evening hours (no more than one evening/week).
- Position requires lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs.
- Position requires handling and exposure to chemicals and cryogens. College supplies proper personal protective equipment.
- Position requires use of step stools to reach high shelves.
