JOB SUMMARY:  Plans and supervises the installation, operation and maintenance of the campus boilers and steam distribution systems, chillers and chilled water distribution systems, and Building Management Systems.  Plans and supervises the installation, operation and maintenance of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in all college facilities. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Review the mechanical plans on new buildings during the design phase to ensure uniformity in equipment and systems.
  • Inspects buildings and other facilities to determine mechanical repair and maintenance needs.
  • Coordinate the work of the Heating Plant Shop with the activities of other repair and maintenance personnel.
  • Coordinate planned outages with college personnel and mechanical contractors.
  • Operate and supervise the operation of steam boilers and steam distribution system according to code.
  • Operate and supervise the operation of campus chillers and chilled water distribution system.
  • Operate and supervise the operation of campus Facilities systems.
  • Operate and supervise the operation of various HVAC systems in all campus buildings.
  • Supervise operating engineers.
  • Order and maintain HVAC supply inventory and monitors all Heating Plant expenditures.
  • Maintain records of time, labor, materials and inventories.
  • Submit work progress reports when required.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment according to OSHA standards in order to minimize safety hazards and accidents.
  • Assist operating engineers in completing work assignments as time permits.
  • Demonstrate the ability to remain current on changing job responsibilities and procedures.
  • Interact with college community in a friendly and cooperative manner which contributes to a positive working climate.
  • Your position has been designated as weather- or emergency-essential. In the event of a closure of the College, it is vital that you report to work only if contacted by your supervisor. You will receive regular pay for the hours normally scheduled to work that day plus your overtime rate at 1 ½ times your regular rate for the actual hours worked during the closing. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Prerequisites

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School degree or equivalent.
  • Minnesota Chief Operating Engineer, Class C, License.
  • Five years HVAC and boiler operating experience.
  • Ability to work rotating weekends.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Graduate of vocational-technical College HVAC program.
  • Three years supervisory experience.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Exposure to outside weather conditions year-round.
  • Works with potentially hazardous chemicals and equipment.
  • Works on ladders, scaffolds and roofs.
  • Regular work requires moderate to heavy physical effort, including lifting as much as 75 lbs.
