German Language and
Culture Study
Challenge Curriculum (Starting Fall 2020)

In Fall 2021, I will be a first or second year student and have previous experience in German.

To meet minimum graduation requirements, students in the Challenge Curriculum will complete at least two sequential courses of a non-English language at the college level. You may choose to continue language study beyond the minimum graduation requirements.

If you have no previous experience in German, you can fulfill the Non-English Language and Culture Requirement by taking German 101 and 102 consecutively. If you have previous experience in this language, you must first take the German placement exam before registering. Guidelines for provisional registration are the following:

1 year of high school – 101
2 years of high school – 102
3 years of high school – 201
4 years of high school – 202

  • If you place in GER 102, you can fulfill the Non-English Language and Culture Requirement by taking GER 102 and GER 201 consecutively (GER 102 in Spring and GER 201 in the following Fall).
  • If you place in GER 201, you can fulfill the Non-English Language and Culture Requirement by taking GER 201 and GER 202 consecutively (GER 201 in Fall and GER 202 in Spring).
  • If you place in GER 202, you will need to take GER 202 and demonstrate at the end of this semester that your level of German proficiency has fulfilled the requirement by passing an equivalent exam to verify your proficiency at the 202 level or higher.
  • For questions regarding German courses that can count for college credit, including PSEO courses in German, German College in the Schools (CIS), or transfer courses from another college or university, please refer to AP, IB, & Other credit guidelines or contact the Registrar's Office.
  • If you have significant experience in German (equivalent to two or more years of college coursework), you may elect to test out of the language and culture requirement by taking an oral exam.

Please note: You need to earn the minimum grade ("C") to continue on to the next level of German class.

Please contact Bastian Treptau with any questions.
