Semester OpportunityLead the signature program in Sweden

Applications to lead the 2024 Sweden Today program are now open!

The Gustavus faculty-led semester program in Sweden is the signature study away program for Gustavus students and faculty members. The program is designed to capitalize on opportunities unique to the locations in which it is held and to integrate classroom instruction and experiential learning activities into a well-conceived whole.

Faculty members interesed in leading upcoming Sweden programs are encouraged to consult with the CICE director to review specific program information, discuss the character of the particular program, and talk about strategies for the application process. In general, faculty directors in this program serve as the instructor of record for all of the included courses, though considerable portions of the direct instruction are handled by local experts and host university professors.

The most desirable qualities for candidates to lead a semester study away program include:

  • have substantial intercultural experience
  • have teaching experience and good teaching evaluations, especially in courses that include experiential learning
  • have some administrative experience, including any combination of setting and enforcing policies, managing budgets, administering programs, coordinating events, and similar tasks
  • have previously led a shorter off-campus or study away experience, such as a community-based learning program, a J-Term program, extended course excursions, etc.
  • enjoy teaching and close mentorship relationships with students
  • are able to remain flexible and to function well in sometimes stressful situations

Please note that the Sweden program is led by just one Gustavus faculty member (or administrator with sufficient credentials). The additional support needed is provided by on-site staff members of the host institution(s) and/or a professional guide who works with our program partner agency. The College does not accept team-teaching applications for this program.

All faculty applications are vetted by the Global Engagement Committee and the CICE director, with final appointment decided by the Provost's Office.

Spring Semester 2024: Faculty interested in serving as the 2023 faculty director should complete the faculty director application and submit it to Bryan Messerly by Monday, November 21, 2022.
