Elementary Education Major Requirements

Students in the Elementary Education program who are recommended for graduation from Gustavus Adolphus College and for an elementary school teaching license must complete the following coursework (subject to changes due to MN Licensure Rule Changes);

  1. All college General Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree. (Curriculum I or Curriculum II courses)
  2. At least two regular semester courses from the Social Sciences.
    Choose two from the following:

    * HIS 140C American History Since the Civil War
      POL 110 E U.S. Government and Politics

  3. Two required Science courses.
    EDU 246LD - Science for Elementary Educators I
    EDU 247LD - Science for Elementary Educators II
    (Those with Science Concentrations-follow concentration course list + EDU 248 Elementary Science Connections)
  4. Two courses in Mathematics.
    MCS 115D - The Nature of Mathematics
    MCS 140D - Elementary Statistics
    OR MCS142D - Introduction to Statistics for Math Concentration
  5. One English course which focuses on composition and writing skills.
  6. FTS 100 First Term Seminar*
  7. One course in Public Speaking.
    COM 110C - Public Speaking
  8. One General Psychology course.
    PSY 100E - General Psychology*

Any substitutions for the above courses will be the decision of the Education Department.
