Lightning Detection System Installed

Campus Safety has installed a lightning detection and warning system funded by a Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry grant. The system, installed on the roof of Lund Center, is designed to predict lightning strikes within a defined geographical area by analyzing the electrostatic field in the atmosphere. If a threat is detected, the system will activate a series of horns and strobe lights to warn those working or playing outside to immediately seek shelter inside a nearby building. Since the system is automated, it can provide advance warning even when there appears to be no evidence of lighting. The lightning detection will be operational daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

New Sprinkler Systems

Uhler, Sohre, and half of Norelius Hall have had sprinkler systems installed in time for the 2005-06 school year. This means that 80% of the residential space on campus and 60% of total campus space is now covered by sprinkler systems. Physical Plant Director Warren Wunderlich says, "The principal benefit is providing greater safety for our students. Secondary benefits include greater peace-of-mind for the parents of our students."
