Elizabeth Baer, (Research Professor in English and African Studies), gave a paper at The Space Between Conference in Montreal in June. The presentation focused on South African artist William Kentridge and is excerpted from her forthcoming book THE GENOCIDAL GAZE: FROM GERMAN SOUTHWEST AFRICA TO THE THIRD REICH.

"Seamless", a series of photographs by Priscilla Briggs, (Art/Art History) will be included in the three-person exhibition "It's so hard to live without you" (with Victoria Crayhon and Karolina Jonderko) as part of the Landskrona Photo Festival in Landskrona, Sweden, Aug. 19-28, 2016. Works from Priscilla's series "Making Mona Lisa" are currently on view, through Aug. 21, as part of the juried exhibition "North of the 45th Parallel" at the DeVos Art Museum in Marquette, MI.

2016 Valleyfair Ticket Tickets...Discounted Valleyfair tickets are available to purchase in the Office of Human Resources, located in the Carlson Administration Building. Tickets are good for any day during the 2016 season. Tickets may be purchased for regular admission (ages 3-61 and 48” or taller) for $32.25, junior/senior (ages 3-61, under 48” tall or 62+ years and includes admission to Dinosaurs Alive!) for $32.25, Dinosaurs Alive! tickets for $2.75 with adult park admission, parking $12.00, and ride & refresh (ages 3-61 and 48” or taller plus unlimited drink wristband) for $39.75. Volunteers Sought...The Center for International and Cultural Education (CICE) is seeking volunteers for its International Friendship Family Program. Gustavus international students are matched with local families. The family will typically invite the student to their home for an occasional dinner, family function, trip or event. It is a great opportunity for the family and the student to share cultures! It does not take a large time commitment and is very rewarding. With the increase in international student enrollment, we need many more families. All families and individuals are welcome! 2016 Opening Reception...Please join us at at 3 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2016 for the Opening Reception. Obituaries

  • Sylvia Carsen, mother of Lori Carson Kelly (Director of the Three Crowns Curriculum, Political Science and Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies), passed away Sat. July 23. Funeral services were held on Fri. July 29. A full obituary can be read online
  • Mary Gover, wife of Tom Gover (Professor Emeritus in Chemistry) passed away on Wed. June 29.  A memorial service will be held at a later date. A full obituary can be read online

In the Media

Here are some noteworthy Gustavus-related stories that recently appeared in print or broadcast media locally, regionally, or around the nation:

  • Perry the Corpse Flower received considerable media attention when it bloomed early this June. The plant was covered on television on KSTP, KEYC, WSPA (Greenville, SC), KLFY (Lafayette, LA), KGWN (Cheyenne, WY), WIBW (Topeka, KS), and KOAM (Joplin, MO); in print/on the internet in the St. Peter Herald, Mankato Free Press, Minneapolis Star Tribune (twice), and BringMeTheNews; and on radio stations KNUJ, KYSM, and KTOE.
  • Rising sophomore Karl Satterlund was mentioned in the Brainerd Dispatch after winning the Swedish Council of America's Swedish Language Scholarship.

  • MinnPost featured the College's partnership with Minneapolis-based Learn to Live to provide online mental health resources to Gustavus students. Director of Health Service Heather Dale was interviewed for the piece.

  • The St. Peter Herald previewed the Arboretum's Linnaeus Symposium, which took place on June 20.

  • The St. Peter Herald announced the Department of Theatre and Dance's 2016-17 schedule.

  • The Mankato Free Press released a piece about the portrait of King Gustavus II Adolf that is being featured at the entrance to the Hillstrom Museum of Art through early July. KEYC also covered the portrait in a segment where museum director Don Myers was interviewed.

  • Rising sophomore women's tennis player Briana Hartman was featured in the Owatonna People's Press after an outstanding first year at Gustavus.

  • History professor Scott Ickes was interviewed on Brazilian politics in the Minnesota Private College Council's monthly newsletter.
