Faculty & Staff News

Ursula Lindqvist (Scandinavian Studies) has just published two books on Nordic cinema. The first is a monograph titled Roy Andersson's "Songs from the Second Floor": Contemplating the Art of Existence (216 pages), published in the University of Washington Press' Nordic Film Classics series. The second is an anthology of 26 original essays commissioned especially for A Companion to Nordic Cinema (632 pages), which Lindqvist co-edited with Mette Hjort of the University of Copenhagen. It is published by Wiley-Blackwell (Boston/Oxford) as part of its Companions to National Cinemas series. In addition to co-editing the book, Lindqvist also contributed an original 8,000-word essay and co-wrote the Editors' Preface and six section introductions for this definitive new volume that offers broad coverage of Nordic cinema from its origins to the present day. Lindqvist would like to express deepest appreciation to the Kendall Center for Engaged Learning, the provost's office, the Department of Scandinavian Studies, the Modern Language Initiative, the Barbo Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, and student copy editor Elizabeth Lutz '15 for assistance and support in bringing both of these books to fruition. Material from both books will be introduced in Lindqvist's reworked SCA 334 Nordic cinema course, cross-listed in Film & Media Studies, in Spring 2017.

Also, Lund Dean's contributions to a national college learning assessment project were recognized with the publication of a new book entitled, Improving Quality in American Higher Education: Learning Outcomes and Assessments for the 21st Century (Jossey-Bass). Edited by Richard Arum, Josipa Roksa, and Amanda Cook, the book is the culmination of a multi-year assessment research project sponsored by the Gates Foundation and the Social Science Research Council. Kathy contributed to the chapter entitled, “ Measuring College Learning in Business.”  Kathy was also re-elected as external examiner for the MSc in Business & Management program at Maynooth University, Ireland, for an additional year beyond the regular three-year term. Her term now ends in 2017.
