President's Cabinet Summary

The President's Cabinet met on Tuesday, July 31, and discussed the following items:

  • Members reviewed the proposed 2012-2013 institutional goals, which will be presented at the Colloquium on August 29. Planning for the Colloquium will be discussed at the next Cabinet meeting.
  • President Ohle reported that the newly established Institutional Resources Group Budget Committee will be meeting on August 1 regarding the College's 2012-2013 operating budget.
  • President Ohle indicated that he and Vice President Young will be traveling to Sweden in August to attend Trustee Ake Bonnier's ordination as Bishop of Skara and to meet with representatives of the Royal Court and the Nobel Foundation to finalize the details of Their Majesties' visit to Minnesota in October and this year's Nobel Conference.
  • President Ohle and Provost Braun proposed and members concurred to conduct ten (of 23 requested) tenure-track searches for faculty who would start in 2013-2014.

 

Faculty/Staff Activities

Kristen Lowe (Art and Art History) published the article, "Franconia Sculpture Park, Where Art and Community are Formed" in the August issue of the lifestyle magazine, Minnetonka Times. Twin Cities Public Television is profiling Lowe on their MN Original program. MN Original is TPT's award-winning weekly arts series celebrating Minnesota’s creative community, across all disciplines and all cultures. The profile on Lowe is scheduled to air September 16, 2012. Lowe's upcoming exhibition at The Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul is scheduled to open Nov 9, 2012, and was mentioned in the fall arts profile in Minneapolis/St Paul Magazine.

 

News & Announcements

Volunteers Sought...The Center for International and Cultural Education (CICE) is seeking volunteers for its International Friendship Family Program. Each Gustavus international student is matched with a local family. The family will typically invite the student to their home for dinner, family functions, or trips, and go to events in which the student is involved. It is a great opportunity for the family and the student to share cultures. If interested, please contact Jeff Anderson (x7493 or jeffa@gustavus.edu) in the Center for International and Cultural Education.

State Fair Booth Training...State Fair training! Monday, August 20 at 3 p.m. in the faculty/staff lounge in the Jackson Campus Center OR Tuesday, August 21 at 11 a.m. in the same location. Please try to attend one session to get information about staffing the Gustavus booth in the Education building. Special instructions regarding our give-away items!

PTO/Vacation Donations Being Accepted...Employees who would like to donate paid time off hours/vacation hours for a Gustavus employee who will be on an approved FMLA leave and will run out of paid-time benefits should complete and sign a request for transfer of pto/vacation hours available at the Office of Human Resources (x7304).

TIAA-CREF Individual Counseling Sessions…A TIAA-CREF representative will be on campus on September 18, 19, and 20, 2012 for individual counseling sessions. To schedule an appointment, contact (866) 843-5640, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Last Edition of Summer Scoop...This is the final publication of the Summer Scoop for this year. To submit items for Inside Gustavus, the College's weekly newsletter during the school term, fill out the online submission form at gustavus.edu/news/submit. The deadline for submissions is 4:30 p.m. on the Tuesday immediately prior to the publication date. The first edition of Inside Gustavus will be posted on Thursday, Sept. 6.

Campus Happenings

Colloquium...A state of the College presentation will be given in Alumni Hall beginning at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29. The annual President's Dinner will follow from 5-7 p.m. in the Evelyn Young Dining Room. All employees and their spouses/partners are invited. First-Year Move-In Day...The Class of 2016 will arrive on campus on Friday, Aug. 31. New Student Orientation will run from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3. Visit gustavus.edu/orientation for more details.

Opening Convocation...Opening Convocation will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 in Christ Chapel. Faculty are invited to gather outside the Chapel in full academic attire at 9:50 a.m.

Reading in Common Author on Campus...Wes Moore, the author of this year's Reading in Common selection The Other Wes Moore, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Christ Chapel.

 

Off-Campus Events of Interest

10 Year Anniversary...Celebrating 10 Years at the Saint Peter Community Center, Wednesday, August 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. Festivities include a hula hoop contest at 4:30 p.m., karaoke contest at 5 p.m., bounce house, bingo, buidling scavenger hunt, face painting, a family sing-a-long at 6 p.m., and refreshments. Free and open to all ages!
