President Cabinet Summary

  1. Members approved the Facilities and Administrative Costs Recovery all-college policy.
  2. Members approved the hiring of an Assistant Women’s Tennis Coach/Swanson Tennis Center Administrative Assistant replacement position.
  3. Members approved the hiring of a Counseling Center position (Staff Psychologist).
  4. Members approved the hiring of a Dining Service replacement position (Rotisserie).
  5. Members approved the hiring of an Advancement replacement position (Gift Accounting Specialist and Data Support).
  6. Members approved adding 10 hours to the temporary position in Community Service until the new Director is on board (approximately November 15).
  7. Members approved the drone all-college policy.

In-Service Opportunity... Learn 2 Live will provide an in-service for faculty and staff to provide resources to help support students. Save the date for October 17 in the Board Room. There will be two afternoon sessions offered. Details to follow in an email/invite soon.

Postage Rate Hike Anticipated... According to Print and Mail Services, the consensus is that the USPS will file for a rate increase of around one percent, with implementation January 22, 2017. The USPS is waiting for final Consumer Price Index (CPI) numbers upon which it must base its rate request. Stay tuned for more updates.

Toner Cartridge Recycling... Print and Mail Services can recycle your cartridges. Please drop off your empty cartridges at the mailroom in the Jackson Campus Center. We ship them to the recycler and they pay the shipping costs. We are committed to enhancing sustainable practices. Please consider recycling your cartridges if you do not already do so.

St. Lucia Nominations Sought... The Gustavus community is encouraged to nominate sophomore women for the St. Lucia Court who exemplify qualities of courageous leadership, service to others, strength of character, and compassion.

Please note that these women do not have to have any Swedish connection or the ability to sing. You may nominate as many women as you wish.The Festival of St. Lucia will be celebrated on Thursday, December 8 during the morning Chapel Service.

Immigration Then and Now... Award-winning author and University of Minnesota professor Erika Lee will be on campus tonight, Thursday, October 13, at 7 p.m. to give a free, public lecture on the first global “immigration crisis of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.” Held in Alumni Hall, Lee's lecture will examine the Asian immigration “crisis” of a century ago, when changing population patterns sparked international debates, race riots, and restrictive immigration laws around the world, and will connect the global history of Asian exclusion to current debates about immigration.

Post-Nobel Open Mic Gathering... Have lingering questions after Nobel conference? Have a reading that adds your discipline's perspective to "in search of economic balance?" Come bring your thoughts to an informal gathering of faculty and students. Open-mic, all contributions welcome, zero pressure. Today, Thursday, October 13 at 4:30 in the Interpretive Center. Fall Visit Days... The admission office is hosting our Fall Visit Days: Explore Gustavus on Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21. We will be hosting over 300 prospective students and their families for tours, sessions, and activities. Please join us in welcoming these potential future Gusties! October 16 1:30 p.m. The Minnesota Percussion Trio will present this concert free to the public which includes a new composition by Gustavus composer Kathryn Johns Bergman '07 in Bjorling Recital Hall.
October 17 7:30 p.m. Combined faculty recital with saxophonist Donnie Norton and pianist Esther Wang in Bjorling Recital Hall.

KNUJ Radio announced tonight's visiting lecturer, Erika Lee, who will discuss the first global immigration crisis at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall.

The St. Peter Herald ran a front-page story about the Linnaeus Arboretum's Fall Fest, which took place last Saturday. Photos are also available online.

Ellis Jones Birthday Party... An open house is planned to honor Ellis Jones, emeritus professor, for his 85th birthday.
