A review article by Associate Professor Dwight Stoll (chemistry) entitled “Recent Advances in 2D-LC for Bioanalysis” appeared in the December issue of the journal Bioanalysis. (doi: 10.4155/bio.15.223).

Maddalena Marinari (History) will serve as an advisor to "Global Minnesota: Immigrants Past and Present," a yearlong series of public programming organized by the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) at the University of Minnesota. The initiative is sponsored by the NEH's Humanities in the Public Square program that supports scholarly forums, public discussions, and educational resources related to the NEH's new initiative, "The Common Good."

News & Announcements 

2015 Tax Forms...W2 tax forms were mailed on Jan. 8 to all employees’ home addresses. Employees who are medical benefit eligible will be receiving one more required tax form 1095-C, were mailed by Jan. 15, 2016. Please note the envelope for both the W2 and 1095-C look similar and read IMPORTANT TAX RETURN DOCUMENT ENCLOSED, on the outside of the envelope. Gustavus is an Applicable Large Employer subject to the employer shared responsibility provision in the Affordable Care Act. This form 1095-C includes information about the health insurance coverage offered to you by Gustavus which you will need to prepare your 2015 individual income tax return. If you should need an additional copy of either the W2 or 1095-C, you may print them from Web Advisor – Employee HR – W2 Statement or 1095-C statement. If you have any questions about your W2 or 1095-C forms, please consult with your tax accountant.

IMPORTANT: THE 1095-C FORM IS ONLY ISSUED TO EMPLOYEES THAT ARE MEDICAL BENEFIT ELIGIBLE.

Save the Date...Max Hailperin, Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics, will present the second annual Matthias Wahlstrom Lecture at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016, in Beck Hall 101. The talk is titled "Liberal Arts Education in the Age of Accountability."

The Matthias Wahlstrom lecture, funded by an anonymous donor, is intended to be an annual lecture by a Gustavus faculty member on the possibilities of the liberal arts in the 21st century. The donor's intent is to annually showcase a Gustavus faculty member's thoughts on this important topic for the college community as whole.

President Bergman will introduce Professor Hailperin and refreshments will be provided for after lecture conversation. 

Campus Happenings 

Provost Q&A led by Provost Mark Braun will continue a series of informal discussion opportunities with Gustavus students. The “Provost’s Listening Post” will be set up once each month at the tables in upper level of the Campus Center. The goal is to provide a relaxed, informal setting for student questions and discussion about the College. Spring dates and times are scheduled for:

Professor Leila Brammer appeared on Kare 11to analyze Sunday night's democratic presidential debate.

Both the St. Peter Herald and Mankato Free Press covered guest speaker Rashad Shabazz's MLK Jr. Memorial Lecture on the geography of race.

Associate Provost Paula O'Loughlin was interviewed on Minnesota Public Radio about the upcoming presidential primaries.

The St. Peter Herald featured the College's designation as a Fair Trade College in a piece that ran this week.

Chaplain Brian Konkol's latest reflection in the Huffington Post focused on South Africa's transition from Apartheid.

Off Campus Events

  • Chad Winterfeldt (Chaplain’s Office) will present an organ recital of music by 17th c. composer Matthias Weckmann and living American composer Frank Ferko on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 4:00 pm at Como Park Lutheran, 1376 Hoyt Ave West in Saint Paul. The recital will be repeated in Saint Peter on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7:00 pm, First Lutheran Church, 1114 W. Traverse Road.

  • Lois Peterson, Dept of Art/Art History will be having an exhibition of her recent mixed-media drawings at the Phipps Center for the Arts. The Phipps Center is located at 109 Locust Street in Hudson Wisconsin. The exhibit titled "Quiet Stories" will host a public opening reception 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. The exhibit will run from Jan. 22 - Feb. 28.

  • Saint Peter Community Childcare Center (SP3C) invites you to Burgers 4 Babies from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25 at Patricks. Support our "Come Grow With Us" campaign to expand our space at the Community Center and meet our community's need for more infant childcare spaces. A portion of every purchase of the bacon cheeseburger basket and $1 for every kid's meal purchase will be donated to SP3C. There will also be a Silent Auction (cash or check only please).   • INTRODUCING….Books in a Bag.  If you belong to a book club, come to the Saint Peter Public Library and check out Books in a Bag, a new project sponsored by the Friends of the Saint Peter Public Library. Each bag contains eight copies of the same title along with a folder containing book discussion questions and other information. Bags may be checked out for six weeks.
    The Friends of the Library welcomes members and patrons to contribute to the growth of the Books in a Bag program through donations made to the Friends of the Library. For information on Friends of the Library visit our website.

  • Mark your calendars for March 19, 2016. There are two big events for John Ireland Catholic School that day. Join us in the morning for the Luck O' The Irish 7k Fun Run, it is a flat course and lots of fun.   • A FIRST Tech Challenge robotics tournament will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Saint Peter High School. Judging and inspections precede match play which will begin at approximately 11:00 a.m. and run through the afternoon. Playoff rounds should begin about 3:15 p.m. followed by the awards ceremony. The public is invited to check out the cool robots and watch teams compete in this year's game, FIRST Res-Q. Contact Chuck Niederriter for more information.

  • The St. Peter Area League of Women Voters will host a panel discussion of homelessness in the St. Peter area  from 7 - 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Senior Center, located in the St. Peter Community Center, 600 South 5th St., St. Peter. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for coffee and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public. The League seeks to understand the issue with an eye towards determining what, if any, public action could be taken by the community. Representatives from the Minnesota Valley Action Council, Nicollet County Social Services, the New Ulm faith community, St. Peter City Administration and St. Peter Law Enforcement will give brief overviews of their experiences working with the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless.   • Come to a potluck fiesta from 5-7p.m. on Sunday, January 24 to learn more about the St. Peter/Petatlan, Mexico Sister City program and meet three students currently visiting from Petatlan. This event, which will be held at First Lutheran Church in St. Peter, is open to the entire Gustavus and St. Peter community. Obituaries

Robert Raymond Behrends, 89, father of Al Behrends, passed away suddenly on Jan. 15, 2016, surrounded by family and friends at the Lakewood Health Center in Baudette, Minn. Funeral services for will be held on Friday, Jan. 22nd at 2 p.m. at Wabanica Lutheran Church in Baudette.  Visitation will be one hour prior at the church with interment at Wabanica Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Friends of Music at Gustavus in memory of Robert Behrends.

PRICE SLASHED!! The only piece of furniture that I have left for sale is the large computer desk. It measures 65 1/2 inches long and 24 inches wide. It has a drawer and a cabinet on each side with the pull out key board. Hole drilled in top for wires and the back is finished so that you can have many options of arranging it.
