Weekly Influenza UpdateOctober 9, 2009

TO: The Gustavus Community
FROM: The Gustavus Pandemic Advisory Committee

Greetings,

With cooler weather upon us and many more indoor gatherings, it is the season for viruses. To prevent the spread of viruses, including influenza-like illness (ILI), continue to take the following precautions:

  • Visit the College H1N1 Influenza A website regularly to review recommendations.
  • If you think you have ILI please call Health Service 507-933-7630 or your healthcare provider. They are able to determine if an appointment is necessary.
  • Practice good personal health habits: hand-washing, covering your cough, adequate sleep.
  • Get vaccinated for seasonal influenza and H1N1 as supplies become available.

This week, 70 new ILI cases were reported at Gustavus. Individuals—students and employees—who become ill with H1N1-like symptoms (fever, cough, etc.) are reminded to fill out a Symptom Report Form online. Individuals who were sick with H1N1 are invited to also fill out a Recovery Report Form online.

Thank you in advance for your diligence in reporting your symptoms and recovery as well as for following preventative steps to not compromise the health of someone else. Have a safe and healthy Homecoming Weekend! Go Gusties!

Sincerely,

Pandemic Advisory Committee Co-Chairs
Heather Dale, Director of Health Service and
Ray Thrower, Director of Campus Safety
