Latin Language

Why study Latin Language at Gustavus?

The Latin Language major provides students with an opportunity to delve deeply into the world of the Roman Republic and Empire through the study of its official language: Latin. Students gain special familiarity with the literature, history, and culture of ancient Rome through Latin language coursework focused on reading ancient texts. Over the course of the major and especially in the department’s Capstone seminar, students acquire methodological approaches and analytical tools that develop the mental agility, critical thinking and communication skills that will continue to assist them in whatever paths of life and career they choose or find themselves.
