Our Country’s Good

In 1787, in the first Australian penal colony, a ragged, half-starved group of convicts put on a performance of The Recruiting Officer, an elegant comedy of manners by George Farquhar. Inspired by this strange-but-true moment of theatre history, playwright Wertenbaker has created a compelling contemporary work. With great humanity and humor, Our Country’s Good uses the many levels of this play within a play to explore class, race, sexuality, and the effects of incarceration on prisoners and on those who imprison them. London critic Georgina Brown proclaimed, “Rarely has the redemptive, transcendental power of theatre been argued with such eloquence and passion.”

Foreshadowing the French Revolution, this hilarious, tightly-plotted farce explores how a group of servants employs every trick in the book to dismantle aristocratic privilege. A timeless comedy of social revolution and change.
