Sidonia Alenuma-Nimoh (Education) was elected as a member of the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Branch of National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME). NAME is a non-profit organization that advances and advocates for equity and social justice through multicultural education. Sidonia was also appointed a member of the mentoring committee of this organization at the national level. Sidonia will also be presenting at the 24th International Conference of NAME this November. Her presentation seeks to examine the challenges and opportunities of an African-born multicultural educator by tracing her intriguing journey in academia and discussing the way fronteras were dismantled or are being dismantled in her quest for the mythical American-Dream. The presentation will illustrate, that con comunidad, cariňo y coraje, everything is possible.
Kathy Lund Dean (Economics & Management) presented multiple sessions at the annual Academy of Management International Conference in Philadelphia. Among them were a workshop titled, “Where’s the ‘evidence’ in evidence-based teaching and learning” and a paper titled, “Employee voice in workplace religious discrimination disputes.” She also chaired her first editorial board meeting for the Journal of Management Education since taking on the editorship with colleague Jeanie M. Forray (Western New England University).
Angelique Dwyer (MLLC & LALACS) and former Geography Visiting Professor, Thomas Sigler, co-authored an article titled: "The Heterogeneous Isthmus: Transnationalism and Cultural Differentiation in Panama", which will be published in the Fall issue of the Bulletin of Latin American Research.
Laura Triplett (Geology) recently took a trip with students Rachel Mohr '16 and Russ Krueger '17 to Utah, to conduct research on how vegetation in river channels changes silica content in the water. The three were working with collaborator Dr. Karin Kettenring, a plant ecologist at Utah State University. The team spent three days canoeing on the Bear River west of Logan and two days hiking along the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument to collect samples. The work was funded by the National Science Foundation.
Eric Dugdale (Classics Department) participated with Amie Goblirsch ('16) and James Skoog ('17) in the Homer Multitext Seminar (June 19-July 3) at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington DC, collaborating with an international team on a digital edition of the Venetus A, the oldest surviving manuscript of Homer's Iliad.
News & Announcements
Three Crowns Card Update...An email sent to College employees on July 25 from Director of Campus Safety Carol Brewer stated that new Three Crowns Cards would be distributed to all employees during the last week of August. Because many employees have not been in the area to have their picture taken, this will be delayed for a short period. The new plan is to print and distribute the new cards at the beginning of the third week of classes. The ID cards will be bulk printed on Sept. 11, 2014. This allows for all employees who have not had their picture taken, to do so by the end of business hours on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Until the new cards are distributed, your old gold colored cards will still work as they always have. If you still need a picture taken, please do so as soon as possible by visiting Dining Services.
Parking Reminders...Please park according to permit color beginning Monday, Aug. 25. Please be sure your vehicle is registered and displaying a valid parking permit. Citations for non-registered vehicles in red and green permit lots will be issued beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 a.m. Vehicles parked without displaying a valid parking permit or in the wrong colored lot will be cited. Visitor parking is always closed to students and staff and is always enforced. Friday, Aug. 29 and Monday, Sept. 1 are student move-in days. Anyone arriving on campus between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. should allow additional time for travel and parking around campus. Traffic will be directed by college personnel at each entrance. Allow extra time for finding an appropriate parking space the first week of classes.
Announcement from the Provost...Provost Mark Braun is pleased to announce the establishment of a new Office of Government Grants and Sponsored Programs with Bob Weisenfeld serving as the Director of Government Grants and Sponsored Programs, reporting directly to the Provost. Effective August 1, 2014, Bob Weisenfeld will be housed in an office adjacent to the Provost’s Office area formerly occupied by Director of Institutional Research, David Menk, who will now be officed in the President’s office area , but continue to report to the Provost.
We anticipate that this new organizational structure will enable Gustavus to increase our government grant and contract funding by allowing Bob to focus most of his activity on the important work of helping faculty and others secure support from public agencies. Thanks in part to his good work we are already near the top of our peer group (#2) in NSF funding for student/faculty research over the last five years. We intend to build on this strength and move forward to provide even greater government grant support to faculty and both academic and non-academic programs. Corporate and Foundation funding will continue to be secured by the Office of Advancement.
Piano Lab School Openings...The Gustavus Piano Lab School has a few openings for new students this fall. In the Lab School, college students teach children from the community under the supervision of the director of the program. If you have a child between 1st and 6th grades who would like to study the piano, please contact Rebekah Richards at rrichard@gac.edu. For more information, visit the program's website.
Volunteers Sought...The Center for International and Cultural Education (CICE) is seeking volunteers for its International Friendship Family Program. Each Gustavus international student is matched with a local family. The family will typically invite the student to their home for an occasional dinner, family function, trip or event. It is a great opportunity for the family and the student to share cultures! If interested, please contact Jeff Anderson (x7493 or jeffa@gustavus.edu) in the Center for International and Cultural Education.
State Fair...Remember to wear your Gustie gear to the great Minnesota get together this year. Make you stop and visit the Gustavus booth in the Education building as well.
Move-in Day Hashtag...If you are active on social media platforms, you can post pictures and other updates on first-year move-in day and use the hashtag #Gusties18. You can follow social media activity on move-in day by going to gustavus.edu/social.
Thank You...Julie Devens (Custodial) would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of those who sent cards and their sympathies to her after her mom passed away on July 17.

Move-in Day Tips
Parking & traffic: Anyone arriving on campus between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. should allow additional time for travel and parking around campus and should avoid Sunrise Avenue and Grace Street if possible, as more than 75% of our new students will be arriving via these entrances. Traffic will be directed by College personnel at each entrance; failure to obey personnel will result in citation. Also on Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 p.m., the Lund Center Parking Lot will be closed to faculty, staff, and students and will reopen for campus parking following the First-Year Orientation square dance event that will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, in the evening. Cars remaining in the lot on Saturday evening will be towed to a different lot at the owner's expense. Permit parking enforcement begins at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Visitor parking is always closed to students and employees and is always enforced. If you have not registered for an employee parking pass, you will need to do so and display a new valid permit by Sept. 2. Visit the Campus Safety web page to register online, or come to the Campus Safety office.
The College Avenue entrance will be routed as EXIT ONLY from campus so please do not plan on driving up College Avenue to enter Campus. Attempting to enter on College Avenue will result in you being re-routed to either the Jefferson or Sunrise/Grace entrances. Additionally, Ring Road between the Jefferson and College Avenue entrances will be restricted to one way traffic going down the hill. Ring Road from the intersection closest to Uhler and North Halls to the College Avenue entrance will be restricted to one way traffic going down the hill as well.
Finally, the following parking lots will be reserved for first-year students and their families on Friday, Aug. 29: Norelius Lot, Guest Lot, Wahlstrom (near Sohre) Lot, and the Arboretum Lot. Employees and upperclass students should park in other lots, including Beck, Lund, Southwest, College View, or the Heating Plant Lot, on the morning of Aug. 29.
Campus Activities/Reservations: Please be mindful that the Campus Activities Office and Information Desk will be busy welcoming and orienting more than 600 students to campus from Friday through Monday and to wait with requests for room and table reservations, poster and flier approval, equipment rentals, office keys for students, and the like. Regular office services are, as much as possible, suspended on move-in day. Thank you for your understanding and for the wonderful commitment and support of so many offices over the holiday weekend. Orientation is truly a College-wide effort and new students and families often comment on their positive experience on day one. Thank you!
