Faculty News

Kyle Momsen (HES) wrote a piece that appeared in the July issue of the NATA News about Stephanie Hope Smith, an athletic trainer from Minnesota that was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

A paper by Dwight Stoll and co-workers Mark Vitha and Andrew Johnson (both of Drake University), and Carrie Johnson (Gustavus ’12) appeared online in the Journal of Chromatography, A on June 28th. The paper describes the application of the System Selectivity Cube and data from the Hydrophobic Substraction Model to the visualization of similarities and differences between large numbers of HPLC stationary phases.

Steve Wright (Music) performed with the Twin Cities Seven jazz group on the opening weekend concert of the 2012 Twin Cities Cities Jazz Festival in St. Paul. A photo in the June 30th StarTribune featured Wright and two other members of the band.

Dr. Stephanie Otto (HES) recently had a case study published in the American College of Sports Medicine's Health Fitness Specialist resource manual which will be released in February 2013.

The Minnesota Museum of American Art will open its new space in the fall with a screening of highlights from Kristen Lowe's (Art and Art History) documentary, Painting the Place Between. Lowe was asked to curate an exhibition of selected works by the four artists in her film: Gustavus professor Betsy Byers, Jil Evans, Andrew Wykes and Holly Swift.

Mark Bjelland's (Geography) review of The Place of Religion in Chicago came out in the latest issue of The Geographical Review. Bjelland also served in a leadership role at the scoring of the College Board's Advanced Placement Human Geography examination.

News & Announcements

Theater Tickets...The Campus Activities Board purchased tickets for students to both Billy Elliot (10/10) and Elf The Musical (12/7) at the Ordway and bought 10 extra tickets for faculty and staff. Tickets will be available to faculty and staff online only at gustavustickets.com and will be $50 each. More information will be available in September.

Volunteers Sought...The Center for International and Cultural Education (CICE) is seeking volunteers for its International Friendship Family Program. Each Gustavus international student is matched with a local family. The family will typically invite the student to their home for dinner, family functions, or trips, and go to events in which the student is involved. It is a great opportunity for the family and the student to share cultures. If interested, please contact Jeff Anderson (x7493 or jeffa@gustavus.edu) in the Center for International and Cultural Education.

Royal Visit Ticket Information...Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden will be on campus on Friday, Oct. 5. Ticketed events include a Festival Worship Service in Christ Chapel at 10:30 a.m. and two concurrent afternoon seminars at 2:30 p.m. A lottery system will be used to distribute tickets to these events. To enter your name in the lottery, go online to gustavus.edu/royalvisit.

Campus Happenings

Gustie Breakfasts...Engage with other friends of Gustavus and learn something about the College at Gustie Breakfasts. On-campus breakfasts are held at 7:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in a campus banquet room. Cost is $8 for an individual or $15 per couple, payable at the door. 2006 graduate Mike Wobschall, web written content coordinator for vikings.com, will speak on Wednesday, Aug. 8. September's breakfast will feature President Jack Ohle, who will speak about the new addition and partnership with the American Swedish Institute.

Off-Campus Events of Interest

Pajama Party Campfire Sing-A-Long…Thursday, August 2 at 5:30 p.m. at Gorman Park. All the way from Atlanta, Georgia, blues and bluegrass performer Bill Malphurs will sing campfire songs, children’s songs, create songs on the spot with kids and more. Roast marshmallows and create a fun pillow case! This event is co-Sponsored by the Creative Play Place and Saint Peter Public Library.

Memorial Golf Tournament...The Nicholas Greve Memorial Golf Tournament will take place at Albion Ridges Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 25. The 18-hole scramble tournament features a 12 p.m. shotgun start. The $75 registration fee includes a cart, green fees, dinner and prizes. Registration forms are available at Albion Ridges, on the Nick Greve Memorial Tourney Facebook page, or at albionridges.com. Nick Greve was an outstanding golfer at Annandale High School and Gustavus Adolphus College. He worked as an auditor for Boulay, Heutmaker, Zibell & Co. PLLP before dying tradgically in 2010.

Obituaries

  • Kathy Mattson, the mother of Deb Swanberg (Dean of Students Office) passed away on Tuesday, July 17 after battling cancer. A celebration of her life with a visitation will be held at Olson Funeral Home on July 22 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. July 23 at First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, Minn.
  • Lois Mattson, the mother of Barbara Zust (Nursing) passed away on Sunday, June 17. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 22 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Marshall, MInn.
  • Susie Fischer, the mother of Jill Fischer (International and Cultural Education) passed away on Sunday, July 15 after a long and courageous battle with COPD. A mass of christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso.

  • Professor Emeritus Don Ostrom was quoted in a Mankato Free Pres story about how Democrats have taken control of the local political scene after years of Republic control.
  • Alumnus Eric Butorac was featured in the Boston Globe about his rise from Division III tennis to one of the top doubles players in the world.
  • Kyle Momsen was featured on the front page of the Sports section of the St. Peter Herald on Thursday, July 19 for ihs work as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Fencing Association. Momsen was also interviewed by KEYC-TV for a July 13 story.
