News & Announcements
Welcome to the 20122 'Summer Scoop'...The Summer Scoop will be published three times this summer: on June 21, July 19, and August 16. Submit items for consideration by e-mailing them to mthomas@gustavus.edu or by filling out the online submission form at gustavus.edu/news/submit. The deadline for submissions is 4:30 p.m. on the Tuesday immediately prior to the publication date.
Faculty Announcements...Three faculty members have been appointed to the following positions:
- Ogden P. and Elizabeth Confer Professor of Entrepreneurship – Kristian Braekkan
- Ethel and Edgar F. Johnson Professor of Fine Arts – Priscilla Briggs
- Raymond and Florence Sponberg Professor of Ethics – Florence Amamoto
Twins Tickets...No matter if the Twins win, a day at the baseball park can be a fun day. A few tickets remain available to join other Gustie employees, Gustavus retirees, and their families for an afternoon of outdoor baseballat Target Field on Wednesday, June 27 when the Twins host the Chicago White Sox. Game time is 12:10 p.m. and tickets are $25/person. Seats are located in the sections 310 and 311. Each person will receive a voucher for a pop and hotdog. Seats are also still available to ride a coach bus at no additional cost. The buses will leave at 10 a.m. at the three flags. Employees may request unpaid release time from their supervisor to attend the game. Please make checks payable to Gustavus and send to the President’s Office. Valleyfair Discounts...Gustavus is participating in the "Good Any Day Discount Program" at Valleyfair. Employees may purchase tickets for regular admission (48" or taller) at $28.50 (savings of $14.99) and Junior/Senior (Ages 3-61, under 48” tall or age 62 and older) for $19.99, to be used any day of the Valleyfair 2012 operating season. Tickets are available for purchase in the Office of Human Resources, located in the Carlson Administration Building.
PTO/Vacation Donations Being Accepted...Employees who would like to donate paid time off hours/vacation hours for a Gustavus employee who will be on an approved FMLA leave and will run out of paid-time benefits should complete and sign a request for transfer of pto/vacation hours available at the Office of Human Resources (x7304).
President's Cabinet Summary
The President's Cabinet met on Tuesday, June 19 and discussed the following topics:
- The tentative schedule and agenda for the Cabinet Summer Workshop to be held from July 23-25 was discussed.
- Members approved the hiring of a full-time GTS replacement position (web developer).
Campus Happenings
Summer Camps...A variety of athletic and summer academic camps are taking place on campus throughout the summer. Please check the College Calendar for dates and times of specific camps.
Gustie Breakfast...Join Gustie alumni, parents, staff, and friends to learn something new about Gustavus at the monthly St. Peter Gustie Breakfast. The July presenter is Tom Brown, director of athletics. Please join us in a banquet room in the C. Charles Jackson Campus Center. Cost is $8 for an individual or $15 per couple. United International College (UIC) Exchange...United International College's summer program, which includes academic courses, culture studies, and field trips will take place between July 5 to August 2. A welcome reception and BBQ for the 17 Chinese students will take place at 5 p.m. on July 12 at the Johns Family Courtyard. Faculty and Staff Activities
Eric Dugdale's (Classics) article, "Lingua Latina, Lingua Mea: Creative Composition in Beginning Latin" has been published in the journal Teaching Classical Languages. This month, Eric also participated in the Manuscript Research Laboratory at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (June 3-8).
Off-Campus Events of Interest
Free Documentary...The St. Peter Food Co-op and the Nicollet County Historical Society are pleased to be providing a free screening of the documentary movie “American Meat” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 31 at the Treaty Site History Center in St. Peter. “American Meat” is a pro-farmer, solutions-oriented look at agriculture and food systems in America. The film ultimately advocates for sustainable sunlight and grass-based farming methods, like those of eco-star Joel Salatin. For more information about the film, go to americanmeatfilm.com. The film will be followed by a discussion with the movie’s director and a few of our local meat producers. Join us at 6 p.m. for a simple dinner from the grill prior to the movie. Dragon Festival...2012 is the Chinese year of the dragon. Join us for dragon art projects, stories, and the highlight of the evening, a performance by a Chinese dance group performing a real Chinese Dragon dance! The festival will be held on Saturday, June 23, at 2 p.m. in Gorman Park. (This event is co-sponsored by the Creative Play Place and Saint Peter Public Library.)
Shetek Day Camp at First Lutheran Church…June 25-28. Cost is $35 for a week of fun. ALL children K-6 are invited to be a part of this week! (You need not be a member of FLC.) 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., with a part in the 7 p.m. Wednesday Worship. Go online for more info and registration form.
