News & Announcements

About the 2011 'Summer Scoop'... The Summer Scoop will be published one more time this summer: on August 18. Submit items for consideration by e-mailing them to ga news@gustavus.edu or by filling out the online submission form at gustavus.edu/news/submit. The deadline for submissions is 4:30 p.m. on the Tuesday immediately prior to the publication date. (NOTE: Submissions about faculty and staff activities and honors will be held for the first posting of Inside Gustavus in September.

State Fair Booth... Gustavus will again staff a booth at the Minnesota State Fair, and you're invited to help out. The booth, in the Education Building, will be covered by administrative, staff, faculty, alumni , and student volunteers. Four-hour shifts are available (9 a.m.-1 p.m., 1-5 p.m., and 5-9 p.m.) each day of the 12-day fair (Aug. 25-Sept. 5), on a first-come, first-served basis. Two or three people are needed for each shift. To sign up, call or e-mail Bob Neuman (admission) at x7681 or bneuman@gustavus.edu.Bob says he ccurrently has openings over Labor Day weekend, September 2-5. "Most shifts are still open." Training for staffing the booth, and information about the State Fair's booth rules and expectations, will be offered in August.

Valleyfair Discounts... Gustavus is participating in the "Good Any Day Discount Program" at Valleyfair. Employees may purchase tickets for regular admission (ages 3-61 and 48" or taller) at $27.00 (savings of $12.99) and Junior/Senior for $9.99, to be used any day of the Valleyfair 2011 operating season. Tickets are available for purchase in the Office of Human Resources located in the Carlson Administration Building.

Volunteers Sought... The Center for International and Cultural Education (CICE) is still seeking volunteers for its International Friendship Family Program. Each Gustavus international student is matched with a local family. The family will typically invite the student to their home for dinner, family functions, or trips, and go to events in which the student is involved. It is a great opportunity for the family and the student to share cultures. If interested, please contact Jeff Anderson (x7493 or jeffa@gustavus.edu) in the Center for International and Cultural Education.

Campus Happenings

'Summer Snapshot'... On two more Fridays this summer—July 29 and August 12—the Gustavus Admission Office will host "snapshot" events for prospective students. Our Summer Snapshot visit events are designed to demonstrate Gustavus's strong academic, athletic, and fine arts credentials and give prospective students and families a “snapshot” of the overall Gustavus experience. The day includes a student-led campus tour, mini-classes led by Gustavus professors, a presentation on admission standards and timelines, financial aid and scholarship information, special-interest sessions, and conversations with Gustavus staff and students.

Lunchtime Tour... Take a lunchtime tour of the Linnaeus Arboretum's 70-acre Coneflower Prairie. Join Bob Dunlap, arboretum naturalist, for an informal prairie walk on Wednesdays at noon to discover the latest wildflower blooms and nesting grassland birds in the prairie's third year of growth. Meet outside the Interpretive Center.
