Gustavus Ranked Highly in Several National Publications... Over the past month, Gustavus received recognition as a top college in several publications. Gustavus was ranked among the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s annual college rankings for 2011; named one of America’s top 100 colleges for 2010 by Forbes.com; rated a top college in The Princeton Review’s guidebook, The Best 373 Colleges, 2011 Edition; and included in the Fiske Guide to Colleges. For more information on these rankings, see the Gustavus news blog.

Corpse Flower Draws Thousands... The blooming of Gustavus's corpse flower, Perry, brought over 5,000 people to campus in late July. Visitors were intrigued by not only the unique structure of the plant, but also its distinctive odor.

Professor Foiled... Gustavus chemistry professor Scott Bur received a bright welcome back to campus after his vacation—and a great deal of media attention. Summer research students cleverly redecorated his office by wrapping the entire contents in tinfoil, and when a journalist on campus for the corpse flower caught a glimpse and snapped a photo, the office quickly made news across the country and around the world.

Collection for Haiti... A 2008 Gustavus graduate, Ali Chorley, volunteered for two weeks in Haiti assisting children orphaned in the natural disaster. She is now collecting needed articles that can be transported by other volunteers continuing to fly down to assist. Items needed are multi-vitamins; clothing from 1-13 yrs.; English reading materials, especially elementary-school-age books; coloring books, flipflops/shoes/sandals, hair binders; and any toys such as yoyos, frisbees, soccer balls, etc. Donations can be deposited in the Peer Assistance Center.

Volunteers Sought... The Center for International and Cultural Education (CICE) is still seeking volunteers for its International Friendship Family Program. Each Gustavus international student is matched with a local family. The family will typically invite the student to their home for dinner, family functions, or trips, and go to events in which the student is involved. It is a great opportunity for the family and the student to share cultures. If interested, please contact Jeff Anderson (x7493 or jeffa@gustavus.edu) in the Center for International and Cultural Education.
