News & Announcements
Last Summer Scoop... This is the last campus newsletter of the 2009 summer. Weekly publication of the College's internal newsletter, newly christened Inside Gustavus, will begin on Thursday, Sept. 3. To announce events and information to the College community, send an e-mail to ga_news@gustavus.edu or submit at http://gustavus.edu/news/submit/.
President's Colloquium and Dinner... Mark your calendar for Wednesday, Sept. 2, for the 2009 President's Colloquium and Dinner. President Ohle will present a "State of the College" address to the Gustavus community at 2:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall. All faculty, administrators, staff and spouses/partners are invited to the President's Dinner, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Evelyn Young Dining Room. Dress is casual, but please respond by Aug. 28 to Pat Leagjeld (x7538 or pleagjel@gustavus.edu).
Commission Gustavus 150 Update... The Commission Gustavus 150 Task Forces completed their work at the end of April, posting 439 recommendations to a website used to gather input from the on-campus community and alumni. Preparations are now being made so the Board of Trustees may work on setting strategic priorities at a workshop in late August. These preparations include analyzing information collected from the recommendations website, merging recommendations that are essentially the same but written by different Task Forces, and reorganizing the recommendations into substantive categories. This information will be shared with the Gustavus community after the start of the new academic year.
Reminder... The College is officially open on Labor Day, Sept. 7. Employees taking the day off must use PTO or a vacation day.
Business Cards… The Office of Marketing and Communication coordinates orders for business cards for faculty and staff. With the roll-out of a new marketing initiative (including subtle changes in our wordmark and font options) slated for October, we expect that most community members will want to wait until then to order new or replacement cards, but if your title has changed or you’ve run out of your previous order, we can place orders using our existing foil masters. The vendor that processes our orders has announced a modest price increase. We will be ordering a much larger quantity of new masters in October for the new-look cards, so we anticipate that the price will decrease. If you have questions or need to order cards now, call x7520 or e-mail marketing@gustavus.edu.
State Fair Booth... Gustavus is again have a booth at the Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 27-Sept. 7, 2009. The booth, in the Education Building, will be "personed" by staff, faculty, alumni, and student volunteers. Training for staffing the booth will be offered on Monday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m. or on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m. The sessions will be held in the Jackson Campus Center in the faculty/staff lounge.
Athletics Hall of Fame... The Gustavus Adolphus College Athletics Department has chosen nine individuals for induction this fall into its Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2009 inductees include Kerri Pool Foss '94 (soccer), Dan Dohmeier '86 (baseball), Bob Klindworth '93 (cross country/track and field), Leisha Johnson Ronning '90 (basketball), C.J. Page '91 (gymnastics), Scott Anderson '92 (football), Jon Lindquist '92 (golf), Amy McCrea Morrell '91 (tennis), and Steve Wilkinson (coach). This group will be honored at the Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet, which will be held in Alumni Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, following the Hall of Fame football game against Carleton at 1:00 p.m.
Staffing Changes in the Career Center... Cynthia Favre, associate director of the Career Center, has assumed the position of interim director of the Career Center for the 2009-10 academic year. Favre, during her 20 years of service at Gustavus, has directed the Career Management program, supporting seniors in their transition to employment and graduate study. Cynthia will direct an office that provides career management, internship services, career counseling, and health professions advising to students. Heather Banks, assistant internship director, will assist students with health professions advising, and Kristen Nelson '06 has been hired as career programs assistant, providing administrative support to the internship program.
Counseling Center Interim Director Announced... Heather Dale, director of Student Health Services, will assume the additional role of
interim director for the Counseling Center for 2009-10. Dale, a physician assistant,
began her tenure at Gustavus in January of 2008 after spending four years in Idaho
practicing at an urgent care and women's health clinic. She holds a B.S. in psychology
from University of Wisconsin at Madison and master of physician assistant degree from Eastern
Virginia Medical School. As a result of her added duties this year, Dale's clinical hours
will be supplemented by another mid-level provider on a part-time basis.
All Aboard... Complete 2009 New Student and Transfer Student Orientation schedules are now available online in pdf form here (click on the links in the left-hand column). We will welcome over 600 new students on Friday, Sept. 4. Approximately 35 transfer students move in on Sunday, Sept. 6, and upperclass students return to campus on Monday, Sept. 7. If you have any questions about orientation, please contact the Student Activities Office at x7598.
International Friendship Family Program... The Center for International and Cultural Education is looking for volunteers for its International Friendship Family Program. Each Gustavus international student is matched with a local family. The family will typically invite the student to their home for dinner, family functions, or trips, and go to events in which the student is involved. It is a great opportunity for the family and the student to share cultures. If interested, please contact Jeff Anderson (x7493 or jeffa@gustavus.edu) in the Center for International and Cultural Education by Aug. 28.
Reading in Common Books... The Kendall Center is able to provide copies of this year's Reading in Common book, Enrique's Journey by Sonya Nazario, to the first 50 full-time faculty members who request it. To put your name in the hat, please click here.
Mail Piece Design... If you are designing a mail piece, Naomi Quiram, director of Postal Services is available to review the layout and determine whether the layout meets USPS mailing requirements. To secure postal discounts you must meet the requirements. Please contact Naomi (x7599 or nquiram@gustavus.edu) with design questions.

As it did two years ago, the Kendall Center will be putting together a publication
listing faculty achievements for 2008 and 2009. If you want to get started, information,
examples, and a form can be found here. Please make the editors
happy, earn good karma, and follow the style guide included there.
