News & Announcements
Welcome to the Summer Scoop... The Summer Scoop will be published three times this summer: June 17, July 22, and August 19. Anyone may submit items for consideration by e-mailing them to ga_news@gustavus.edu or by filling out an online submission form at http://gustavus.edu/news/submit. The deadline for submissions is 4:30 p.m. on the Monday prior to the publication date.
A Warm Welcome Back... Gustavus welcomes back Ray Thrower as director of campus safety. He spent several months in Saudi Arabia
where he served as deputy manager of security staff at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He will officially resume his position at Gustavus on July 1.
College Holiday... Friday, July 3, 2009 (Fourth of July Holiday).
Summer Parking... Summer parking rules are now in effect. Visitor parking is still closed to students and staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; however, vehicles may park in any red, green, or yellow parking space without regard to permits. Fire lanes, sidewalks, and spaces reserved by signs (e.g., 30-minute, Vendor/Maintenance, Head Resident) will still be enforced.
Vacation Donations Being Accepted... Employees who would like to donate vacation hours for a Gustavus employee who will be on an approved FMLA leave and will run out of paid-time benefits should complete and sign a request for transfer of vacation hours available at the Office of Human Resources (x7304).
Parade Volunteers Wanted... Gustavus will again have a "float" in the St. Peter 4th of July Parade. Volunteers are needed to march, walk, ride bikes, wagons, or strollers and give away goodies and smiles to the parade watchers. All faculty and staff members, along with their spouses, partners, family members, and friends, are welcome to join. Volunteers are needed from about 9 a.m. until noon on July 4. Severe Weather Reminder... Community members and their guests are reminded to tune to the following media sources to be updated on local weather conditions:

State Fair Booth... Gustavus is again planning a booth at the Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 27-Sept. 7, 2009. The booth, in the Education Building, will be "personed" by staff, faculty, alumni, and student volunteers. Four-hour shifts are available (9 a.m.-1 p.m., 1-5 p.m., and 5-9 p.m.) each day of the 12-day fair. Two or three people are needed for each shift. To sign up, call or e-mail Bob Neuman (x7681 or bneuman@gustavus.edu). Times will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Training for staffing the booth will be offered on Monday, Aug. 24. at 1 p.m. or on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m. They will be held in the Jackson Campus Center in the faculty/staff lounge.
Finance Window Summer Hours... The Gustavus Finance Office cashier window summer hours will be in effect from June 15 through Aug. 15. The hours are as follows: Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Valleyfair Ticket Deals... Gustavus is participating in the “Good Any Day Discount Program” at Valleyfair. Employees may purchase tickets for the early/late season at $23.50 (savings of $14.49), regular admission (48” or taller) at $25.50 (savings of $12.49), and Junior (3 years & older but less than 48” tall) or Senior (ages 62 & older) at $16.99, to be used any day of the Valleyfair 2009 operating season. Tickets are available for purchase in the Office of Human Resources.
Van Pool Initiative for the Cities Commute... Commuter: Tired of doing the driving to and from the Cities? Perhaps you might be interested in getting in on a van pool. It may offer considerable benefits to your wallet, not to mention protecting your sanity and helping reduce your carbon footprint. The Metropolitan Council has a fleet of new vans that they lease out to van pooling groups. They subsidize 55% of the van lease, leaving users only 45 percent of the expense to pay. Campus Happenings
New Student Registration... New students will meet with faculty members to register for fall semester courses on June 30, July 1 and 2. In addition to registration, students will have their ID pictures taken; families will be able to meet with staff from the Financial Aid Office and Student Accounts, and with the Dean of Students about transition issues that begin this summer. College staff will be available to talk about study abroad, Curriculum II, campus technology, living in community, and disability services.
Summer Snapshot... On July 10, July 24, and August 7, Gustavus will host "snapshot" events for prospectives students. Our Summer Snapshot visit events are designed to demonstrate Gustavus's strong academic, athletic, and fine arts credentials and give prospective students and families a “snapshot” of the overall Gustavus experience. The day includes a student-led campus tour, mini classes by Gustavus professors, admission standards and timelines, financial aid and scholarship information, and conversations with Gustavus staff and students.
Off-Campus Events of Interest
Relay For Life... Relay For Life will be held this Friday, June 19th at Minnesota Square Park, St. Peter (with rain location of St. Peter Community Center). The event has three programs: Survivor Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. with speakers Steve and Barb Wilkinson, Luminaria Ceremony at 9:00 p.m. with speaker Dale Bjorklund, and closing ceremony at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday morning. Activities begin at 5:00 p.m. with food stand, cancer education booths, music, games, and activities for all ages. There is an amazing silent auction that begins at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. (with check out following Luminaria Ceremony). Volunteers are needed beginning at noon! Survivors can pre-register for a t-shirt by contacting Ann Volk (507-931-5816 or avolk@gustavus.edu).
Community Arts... The Arts Center of Saint Peter (315 S. Minnesota Ave.) is proud to present The Arts Center’s Own: 10th Annual Membership Mixed Media Show and Mixin’ It Up: VSA Student Show. The two exhibitions will open Friday, June 12, and run through July 19. Gallery and gallery shop hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 1-5 p.m., and Thursdays, 1-8 p.m. For more information, visit www.artscentersp.org.
Read and Feed... The St. Peter School District is sponsoring free lunches and reading activities for children this summer! Free lunch is provided for all children ages 1-18 who attend. There are no income guidelines required. Adults may choose to purchase a lunch for $3.25.
Reading activities include story time, books to read, open library for 7th-12th grade students, and more! This program runs Monday-Thursday, June 10-July 30, 2009. Lunch served 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. So join us at St. Peter Public High School Cafeteria (100 Lincoln Drive, St. Peter). No registration is required. Interested in volunteering?
