News & Announcements

Ranking News… This month Gustavus has been recognized for excellence in three national rankings.

  • U.S. News & World Report ranked Gustavus among the top 100 Best Liberal Arts Colleges in the national liberal arts college category. Gustavus was ranked 88th and was one of six Minnesota colleges in the top 100.
  • Forbes.com ranked Gustavus as one of America’s Best Colleges for 2008. This new report ranked 569 undergraduate institutions based on the quality of the education they provide and how much their students achieve. Gustavus was in the top 20 percent at 103rd, along with only two other Minnesota institutions (Carleton College and St. Olaf). Gustavus was also the only Minnesota school on a “30 Surprises” list, which included some of the best colleges in the country. Gustavus was reportedly a surprise because it was unranked in last year’s U.S. News rankings.
  • Finally, the Princeton Review’s college guidebook included Gustavus in its list of 368 best colleges and was recognized as having the 10th best food in the nation.

Reminder... The College is officially open on Labor Day, Sept. 1. Employees taking the day off must use PTO or a vacation day.

Parking... On Monday, Aug. 25 parking lot designations begin for the new school year—employees park in green-permit spaces, students in red/yellow spaces. Friday, Aug. 29 is first-year student move-in day. Anyone arriving on campus between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. should allow additional time for travel and parking around campus. Traffic will be directed by college personnel at each entrance. Also on Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 p.m. the Lund Parking Lot will be closed to faculty, staff, and students and will reopen for campus parking following the First-Year Orientation square dance event that will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 in the evening. Parking permits need to be displayed on vehicles beginning on Sept. 1. If you have not registered your vehicle yet, please visit the Safety and Security office in the basement of Norelius Hall. Employees only need to request permits for not yet registered vehicles.

Van Training... In an effort to meet the needs of busy students and employees, the Department of Safety and Security now offers a two-part 10-Passenger Van Training Course. Part 1 of the course consists of a 30-minute online course with two tests. This course can be taken online at times that are convenient to the participant. Part 2 of the course consists of a brief overview of the Gustavus10-Passenger Van Policy as well as a hands-on driving course. The process is as follows: Part 1: E-mail your name, student/employee ID#, e-mail address, and phone number to jstratma@gustavus.edu. Within three business days, you will receive a username and password to complete the online training. Participants must pass two online exams with 90-percent or better. Once the online course is completed, print out the Certificate of Completion and bring it with you to Part 2 of the course. Part 2: Once you have completed Part 1, look at the calendar posted online at gustavus.edu/news/calendar to see when the next scheduled van training is (the first of the school year is Sept. 4). When you have located a date that fits into your schedule, contact the Department of Safety and Security at extension 8888 and provide them your name, e-mail address, phone number, and student/employee ID# and request to sign up for Part 2 of the course. Participants will attend a brief overview of the Gustavus 10-Passenger Van Policy, as well as drive a van. It is required that participants bring their Certificate of Completion for the online portion of the course as well as a valid driver's license. Once participants have completed both parts, they will be awarded a wallet-sized verification card that is required to reserve and drive a 10-passenger van.

Campus Happenings

Lecture... On Monday, Sept. 22, Dr. Donny George Youkhanna will deliver a public lecture, “Looting the Iraq Museums: Loss of Nation’s Memory,” in Alumni Hall. Dr. Youkhanna is the former Director General of Research and Studies for the Board of Antiquities in Iraq and Director General of the National Museum in Baghdad, Iraq. During the U.S.-led invasion of Baghdad, approximately 15,000 Mesopotamian artworks and artifacts, some as old as 6,000 years, were looted from the National Museum. Dr. George has called it “the crime of the century, because it affects the heritage of all mankind."
