News & Announcements

State Fair Booth... Gustavus is again planning a booth at the Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 21-Sept. 1, 2008. The booth, in the Education Building, will be "personed" by staff, faculty, alumni, and student volunteers. Four-hour shifts are available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day of the 12-day fair. Two or three people are needed for each shift. To sign up, call or e-mail Bob Neuman (x7681, bneuman@gustavus.edu). Times will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Prior to the fair, training will be provided (see below).

State Fair Training... Anyone who will be staffing the State Fair Booth is asked to attend training on either Monday, August 18 at 1:00 p.m. or Tuesday, August 19 at 3:00 p.m. in the Faculty and Staff Lounge. Participants will receive training on how to manage the booth as well as their ticket to the fair. If you cannot attend one of these sessions, please contact Bob Nueman at x7681 or bneuman@gustavus.edu.

Valleyfair Tickets.... Discounted Valleyfair tickets are available for purchase in the Office of Human Resources, located in the lower level (west) of Uhler Hall.

Summer Parking... Summer parking rules are now in effect. Visitor parking is still closed to students and staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; however, vehicles may park in any red, green, or yellow parking space without regard to permits. Fire lanes, sidewalks, and spaces reserved by signs (e.g., 30-minute, vendor/maintenance, Head Resident) will still be enforced.

Severe Weather Reminder... Community members and their guests are reminded to tune to the following media to be updated on local weather conditions:

  • Radio Stations — KRBI 105.5 FM / 1310 AM (St. Peter), KDOG 96.7 FM (Mankato), KEEZ 99.1 FM (Mankato), KYSM 103.5 FM (Mankato), or WCCO 830 AM (Mpls/St. Paul)
  • Television Stations — Channel 4 (Minneapolis/St. Paul), Channel 5 (Minneapolis/St. Paul), Channel 11 (Minneapolis/St. Paul), or Channel 12 (Mankato)

Bicycle Registration… All students, faculty, and staff who have a bicycle on campus must register upon arrival at the College. Registration of bicycles is accomplished in person at the Safety and Security Office located in the basement of Norelius Hall Room A35 or you can also register online at https://gustavus.edu/security/permits/index.php There is no fee for registering a bicycle. You will receive a free Gustavus Adolphus College Bicycle identification sticker that is to be placed on your bicycle.

2009 Linnaeus Arboretum Calendar Is in the Works… The first Linnaeus Arboretum Calendar is on the “drawing” board. Featuring the photography of Anders Bjorling ’58 (former Gustavus comptroller) and the phenological observations of Jim Gilbert ’62 (instructor in environmental studies), the 13-month calendar of arboretum and campus scenes will be available this fall. Campus Happenings

Summer Snapshots... On Friday, July 25, and Friday, August 8, 2008, the Admissions Office will host high school juniors, seniors, and their families to demonstrate Gustavus's strong academic, athletic, and fine arts credentials and give a “snapshot” of the Gustavus experience. Prospective students will also be given a tour of the campus and an overview of the financial aid and admissions timeline.

  • Sullivan Wolter Kane was born July 13, 2008, to Communication Studies Instructor Sarah Wolter '02 and her partner Blake Kane '02.

Here are some noteworthy Gustavus-related stories that recently appeared in print or broadcast media around the nation:

  • The Sacramento Bee printed a story on July 15 about 2003 alum Eric Butorac and his professional tennis career. Gustavus is mentioned four times in the story.
  • 2008 graduate Matt Toppin was featured and quoted in a July 14 Star Tribune story about recent college graduates facing realities in a tight job market.
  • The Mankato Free Press printed a story about Jeffrey Rathlef becoming the College’s new director of community service programs in its July 14 edition.
  • The Mankato Free Press printed a story about the public safety exercise on campus in its July 11 edition.
  • KEYC-TV ran a story on its July 10 newscasts about the public safety exercise on campus.
  • The Gustavus football stadium and Hollingsworth Field was featured in Athletic Business magazine after being selected as one of 89 state-of-the-art athletic facilities built in the last year.
  • Gustavus was mentioned in an Associated Press story that ran in several media outlets including the Star Tribune, St. Cloud Times, KSTP-TV, and KAAL-TV about job cuts at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. The story raised security concerns for the College.
  • The St. Peter Herald printed a story about the 20 Chinese exchange students who are currently studying at Gustavus in its July 3 edition.
  • The St. Peter Herald printed a front page story about the start of Jack Ohle’s tenure as president in its June 26 edition.
  • The St. Peter Herald printed a story about Lutheran Summer Music in its June 26 edition.
  • The St. Peter Herald printed a story about Tom Young being named V.P. of Institutional Advancement in its June 26 edition.
