The Summer Scoop for June 26

Volume 16, Number 1

News & Announcements

Welcome to the Summer Scoop... The Summer Scoop will be published three times this summer: June 26, July 24, and Aug. 21. Anyone may submit items for consideration by e-mailing them to ga_news@gustavus.edu or by filling out an online submission form at http://gustavus.edu/news/submit/. The deadline for submissions is 4:30 p.m. on the Tuesday prior to the publication date.

Volunteers Sought... The Office of International Education is looking for volunteers for its International Friendship Family Program. Each Gustavus international student is matched with a local family. The family will typically invite the student to their home for dinner, family functions, or trips, and go to events in which the student is involved. It is a great opportunity for the family and the student to share cultures. If interested, please contact Jeff Anderson (x7493 or jeffa@gustavus.edu) in the Office of International Education by July 21.

Looking for Hosts… Twenty college students from China will be on campus this July, and we hope to show them how families celebrate the 4th of July. Would you volunteer to host two of these students for the day's celebration in town? Transportation and expenses can be provided. If interested, please contact Bob or Judy Douglas at 507-931-6586.

Missing… Within the past six months, someone borrowed the Gustavus burning iron from the Physical Plant Department. Please look around your office areas for a wooden box with brass corners and handle on it with a burning iron inside that has the three crowns and Gustavus Adolphus College lettering on it. Please drop it off at the Physical Plant Office or call x7504 for pickup.

New Mileage Rate... Effective July 1, mileage reimbursements will be eligible for the new IRS guideline of 58.5 cents/mile. This can only be applied to business travel occurring after June 30.

Parade Volunteers Wanted... Gustavus will again have a "float" in the St. Peter 4th of July Parade. The St. Peter Chamber of Commerce has chosen a "circus" theme this year and we will rally around the “Circus Calliope” at the beginning of the parade. Volunteers are needed to march (or ride bikes, wagons, or strollers) and give away goodies and smiles to the parade watchers. All faculty and staff members, along with their spouses, partners, family members, and friends, are welcome to march in "circus" garb. Marchers are needed from about 9 a.m. until noon on July 4. If interested, or for more information, contact Jacob Seamans (x6213 or jseamans@gustavus.edu) or Dean Wahlund (x7521). The Chamber of Commerce is also looking for people to help with the 4th of July picnic (serve at the brat or chicken stands, staff the information booth) at Minnesota Square Park. If you can help, contact Dean or call the Chamber directly at 507-934-3400 by June 29.

Missing… A missing lion, answering to the name "Gus," was last seen at the Senior Week Fiesta. Anyone with information on the location of our friendly mascot is asked to contact Cassandra at x7598. Eyes: Large, plastic; height: 6-feet-plus; mane: golden.

Reminder… This is just a friendly reminder that, where thermostats can be adjusted, they should be set to 78 degrees F. during the air conditioning season. Many of the campus thermostats were set at 65 degrees F. all winter, so it might be worth a check in your work area to make sure they have been moved to the summer setting of 78 degrees F. If you have questions about how to do this or if equipment does not seem to be working as it should, please contact the Physical Plant office.

State Fair Booth... Gustavus is again planning a booth at the Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 21-Sept. 1, 2008. The booth, in the Education Building, will be "personed" by staff, faculty, alumni, and student volunteers. Four-hour shifts are available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day of the 12-day fair. Two or three people are needed for each shift. To sign up, call or e-mail Bob Neuman (x7681, bneuman@gustavus.edu). Times will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Prior to the fair, training will be provided. Training meeting information will be announced at a later date.

Valleyfair Tickets.... Discounted Valleyfair tickets are available for purchase in the Office of Human Resources, located in the lower level (west) of Uhler Hall.

Summer Parking... Summer parking rules are now in effect. Visitor parking is still closed to students and staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; however, vehicles may park in any red, green, or yellow parking space without regard to permits. Fire lanes, sidewalks, and spaces reserved by signs (e.g., 30-minute, Vendor/Maintenance, Head Resident) will still be enforced.

Campus Happenings

Lutheran Summer Music Returns... Lutheran Summer Music, a four-week summer music training program founded in 1982, returns to the Gustavus campus this summer, running through July 20. More than 150 young musicians and an outstanding faculty of artists and musicians from across the United States are taking part in this intensive educational session and will present more than 20 recitals and concerts on the campus during the course of the month. Each event on the schedule is open to the public at no cost. A free-will offering will be taken to help defray some expenses.
The schedule of events includes performances by faculty, guest artists, students, and student ensembles nearly every day of the camp. This summer's guest artists include the Rose Ensemble, the Praetorius Brass Quintet, Sine Nomine Vocal Ensemble, and the Movere Woodwind Quintet. In addition, Lutheran Summer Music is pleased to collaborate this summer with members of the Minnesota All-State Lutheran Choir in a special concert in Christ Chapel at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1.
For a complete schedule or up-to-date information regarding public performances at Lutheran Summer Music, please call the summer office at 507-933-7741 or log on at www.lutheransummermusic.org.

NYSP at Gustavus... Gustavus will host the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) July 7-26. The program serves youth ages 10-16 from communities surrounding St. Peter. The focus and purpose of the program is to improve the health, well-being, and physical fitness of qualifying young people, as well as to empower participants by giving them the chance to participate in athletics, academics, and creative activities. For more information, contact Rita Curtin (education; 507-933-6410 or rcurtin@gustavus.edu).

Summer Snapshots... On Monday, July 14, Friday, July 25, and Friday, August 8, 2008, the Admissions Office will host high school juniors, seniors, and their families to demonstrate Gustavus's strong academic, athletic, and fine arts credentials and give a “snapshot” of the Gustavus experience. Prospective students will also be given a tour of the campus and an overview of the financial aid and admissions timeline.

Off-Campus Events of Interest

Theatre Outing... Gustavus Library Associates invites community members to a special summer event, Forever Plaid, at the Old Log Theater, Thursday, July 17, beginning with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. Dinner follows at 6:30 p.m. with curtain time at 8 p.m. The Broadway hit Forever Plaid is the story of four singers who return from heaven for one last engagement. “The Plaids” blend witty comedy, outlandish choreography, and harmonize to some of the 1950s’ greatest hits, including "Catch a Falling Star," "Magic Moments," and "Three Coins in the Fountain." The cost for a “choice” dinner and the performance is $48 per person. Contact the Office of Marketing and Communication at x7550 before July 11 for an invitation flyer.
