Faculty/Staff Activities
Chaplain Brian Konkol is the keynote speaker for the "Glocal Mission Event" of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which will take place on October 17-18, 2014 at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. His talk is titled, "The Conversion of our Connections".
Julie Bartley (Geology), with colleagues Fernando Gomez, Linda Kah, and Ricardo Astini, has published a paper describing microbial structures in a high-altitude saline lake. The paper, titled "Microbialites in a high-altitude Andean lake: multiple controls on carbonate precipitation and lamina accretion," appeared in the journal PALAIOS this month.
Michelle Twait (Library) and Anna Hulseberg (Library) presented a session with two librarians from Carleton College entitled "Studying the Second Year: College Sophomores, Research Behavior, and Information Communication" at the Minnesota Library Association Conference in Mankato on October 8.
Tom LoFaro (Mathematics and Computer Science) had the paper "Dynamic divisive normalization predicts time-varying value coding in decision-related circuits" accepted by the Journal of Neuroscience. The paper is co-authored with Kenway Louie, Ryan Webb, and Paul Glimcher.
James Patrick Miller and Heidi Johanna Miller, both new faculty in the music department, will be co-conducting three performances with the Encore Wind Ensemble, a collection of some of the Twin Cities' top instrumentalists dedicated to the performance of traditional and contemporary masterworks for band. The concerts take place on November 13 (7 p.m., Tartan High School in Oakdale) and February 18 (7 p.m., East Ridge High School in Woodbury), with a third performance on February 7 jointly with the Gustavus Wind Orchestra in conjunction with their 2015 tour. President's Cabinet Summary
The President's Cabinet met on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and discussed the following items:
- Members reviewed the activities of the recent Crown Council meeting and the October Board meeting.
- Members also reviewed the activities surrounding the presidential inauguration, Homecoming, and the Nobel Conference. President Bergman expressed her great appreciation for the excellent work faculty, staff, and students did to make these events so successful.
- A brief discussion was held regarding the importance of all employees participating in the Title IX training program.
- Members approved the hiring of a part-time Dining Service replacement position (cashier).
News & Announcements
St. Lucia Court Nominations...You are asked to nominate sophomore women who are a light to others and exemplify these qualities: courageous leadership, service to others, strength of character, and compassion.You may nominate as many women as you wish. The Festival of St. Lucia will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 11 during the morning Chapel service.
PTO/Vacation Donations Being Accepted...Employees who would like to donate paid time off hours/vacation hours for a Gustavus employee who will be on an approved FMLA leave and will run out of paid-time benefits should complete and sign a request for transfer of pto/vacation hours available at the Office of Human Resources (x7304).
Harassment Advisors Appointed...The following individuals have been appointed to serve as Harassment Advisors by President Bergman: Cindy Johnson, Ann Johnson, Sara Masters, Alan K. Meier, Janice Nordstrom, Charlie Potts, Alisa Rosenthal, Amy Seham, and Katalina Traxler. You can contact any of the advisors via email by clicking on their name. Harassment Advisors are administrators and faculty who have been specially trained
as neutral resource people for other members of the college community
regarding harassment and/or sexual harassment and the options available
for redress. The College wants our working and learning environment to
be a safe space for all members of the College community. We encourage anyone in the Gustavus community, whether student, staff or
faculty, who is experiencing harassment, to contact anyone of these
individuals.
Campus Happenings
Anderson Theatre Presents...Tickets are now available online at gustavustickets.com or by calling 507-933-7590 for the Anderson Theatre production of Angels in America, A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Part I: Millennium Approaches. Performances will be held Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee performance on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. Gustavus students and staff are entitled to one free ticket for the production. Other tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for senior citizens and other students. Tickets not sold before the event will be placed on sale one hour prior to curtain at the Anderson Theatre box office.
GHP Lunch and Learn...The Wellness Center and GHP are sponsoring a Lunch and Learn from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the Heritage Room. Briana Hinz, from Profile, will be presenting on their comprehensive wieght management program. The program was designed by Sanford Health physicians and focuses of nutrition, activity, and lifestyle adaptations required for short and long-term success. As an employee partner, Gustavus employess receive substantial discounts on memberships and products. Feel free to bring your own lunch, or if you choose to eat at the buffet the price is reduced to $5 per person. Faculty Meeting...The regular monthly meeting of the faculty will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 in Wallenberg Auditorium.
Documentary Screening...The African Studies Program will host Dr. Chérif Këita, Professor of French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures at Carleton College, on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Dr. Këita will present one of his documentary films at 7 p.m. in Room 127 of Confer Hall. For more information, please contact Professor Paschal Kyoore.

Inside Gustavus is a newsletter for Gustavus Adolphus College employees produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication.
