Faculty/Staff Activities

Ursula Lindqvist and Kjerstin Moody (Scandinavian Studies) attended the MLA Conference in Chicago, January 9-12. Both Lindqvist and Moody have served/serve on the Executive Committee of the Scandinavian Languages and Literature Discussion Group, with Lindqvist just finishing her fifth year and Moody just beginning her first of a five-year appointment on the Committee.

  • Alum Eric Butorac and Gustavus have been featured by a number of state media outlets during his run to the Australian Open finals including the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press.
  • KEYC-TV and the Metro Lutheran covered the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • The Mankato Free Press printed a story on Thursday, Jan. 23 about Bruce McClain's upcoming gallery talk at the Hillstrom Museum of Art.

News & Announcements

Looking for Piano Students...The Gustavus Piano Lab School has openings for a few new piano students starting in February. We are looking for children in grades 1-4 who would like to begin piano lessons, studying with a Gustavus student teacher. Interested parents should contact Rebekah Richards, director of the program at rrichard@gac.edu. More information about the program is available online.

Registration Open for Women in Leadership Conference...Registration is now open for the fourth annual Gustavus Women in Leadership Conference, which will take place on April 10 at the American Swedish Institute. This year's conference is titled "Leadership For the Greater Good: How Talented Women Thrive" and will feature keynote speakers Sarah Cuthill '85 and Margaret Anderson Kelliher '90, along with several other business professionals who will lead various breakout sessions. Tickets are $25 for students, $35 for recent graduates and $75 for the general public, and can be purchased online. More information is available on the Conference's website.

GWO in Europe...The Gustavus Wind Orchestra is currently in the middle of its international concert tour in Central Europe. You can follow the ensemble's trip by going online to touring.blog.gustavus.edu.

Three Cheers for Booty...Eric "Booty" Butorac '03 has advanced to the finals of the men's doubles draw at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Butorac and his partner Raven Klaasen of South Africa will face the No. 14 seeds Lukasz Kubot and Robert Lindstedt in the finals on Saturday night (early Saturday morning in the United States). You can watch the match live online at espn3.com.

Moe Lecture...This year's Moe Lecture in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies will feature Nigerian-American writer Chimamanda Adichie on March 10. Adichie is the author of of the novels Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun. This year's Moe Lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall. More details to be announced later.

Bruce McClain Gallery Talk...Bruce McClain will repeat his Hillstrom Museum of Art gallery talk at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26. This talk will be held in the Museum, amidst the works on view in the exhibition Bruce McClain: A Retrospective Exhibition, which is on view through Jan. 31.

Time to LOL...Comedian Beth Stelling, who has appeared on Conan O'Brien's late night show, will perform at 8:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall on Friday, Jan. 24.

Off-Campus Events of Interest

Oscar Party…The Creative Play Place invites you to join us in celebrating the 86th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at 5 p.m. at Patrick's on Third. There will be Oscar watching, contests and games, bingo, exciting entertainment, prizes, and much more! Tickets are $30 per couple and include appetizer, red velvet cake, and choice of pitcher of beer or bottle of wine; $10 per child includes red velvet cake and root beer. Purchase tickets in advance at the Creative Play Place, Patrick’s, or through a Creative Play Place board member. Proceeds from this fundraiser help keep the Creative Play Place open and free for all!

Obituaries

  • Grant Douglas Rorem '14, age 23, of Minnetonka, passed away on Jan. 20. Grant was a senior Physics major and a 2009 graduate of Hopkins High School. He was a wonderful and loving son, brother, fiancé, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. Preceded in death by grandparents Bill and Dorothy Jean Williams, grandmother Betty Rorem, and cousin Zoya Sulzen. Survived by parents Bruce and Carol, brother Garrett, "adopted brother" Justin Shanedling, fiancée Lindsey Hjelm '13, Lindsey's parents Rick and Melanie, Lindsey's brother Sam Hjelm '15, grandfather Harold Rorem, aunts, uncles, cousins, as well as many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 24 from 4-8 p.m. at Washburn-McReavy Eden Prairie Chapel. Funeral service will be Saturday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at Grace Church, 9301 Eden Prairie Road (enter through door #4) in Eden Prairie. Memorials preferred to Relay for Life, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), or Two Rivers Vineyard Church in Mankato.

Inside Gustavus is a newsletter for Gustavus Adolphus College employees produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication. It is published weekly during the academic year (except during the week of Thanksgiving, the Christmas break, Touring Week, and the Spring and Easter breaks). Anyone may submit items by filling out an online submission form. While online submissions are preferred, items may also be submitted typewritten on a letter-sized sheet of paper. Send "snail mail" items to: Inside Gustavus, Office of Marketing and Communication. Items must reach the office no later than 4:30 p.m. on the Tuesday before publication.
