Magney Family.  Papers of the Magney Family 1903-1968.  CAMC Collection 94.  6 folders.

ABSTRACT:
The Magney Family collection contains materials related to four children of Jonas Magny, the first student of Gustavus Adolphus College.  There are articles, speeches, correspondence, and other material belonging to or referencing Clarence Reinhold Magney.  There is correspondence for Gottlieb Renatus Magney and Fredolph Herman Magney and his wife Ruth Taylor Magney.  There are also scans of yearbook pages pertaining to Edla Magney.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:
Clarence Reinhold (C.R.) Magney was born 11 January 1883 in Wisconsin.  He attended Gustavus Adolphus Academy and College, graduating in 1903.  He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1908 and practiced law in Duluth, Minnesota.  In 1917, he was elected mayor of Duluth but resigned in 1920 to run for district judge and was elected in November.  Governor Edward J. Thye appointed him as an Associate Judge of the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1943.  He retired in 1953 and spent the rest of his life traveling.  He died in 1962.

Gottlieb Renatus (G.R.) Magney (also known as Gottfried) was born 14 April 1884 in Wisconsin.  He attended the University of Minnesota where he studied engineering.  He went on to practice architecture in Minneapolis. He worked for an architectural firm that planned the Foshey Tower, the Minneapolis Post Office, several building on the University of Minnesota campus, and most of the large hospitals in Minneapolis.  He retired in 1953 and died during 1969.

Fredolph Herman (F.H.) Magney was born 4 March 1886 in Wisconsin.  He was licensed as a pharmacist in 1908 and in 1909 he began studying for a degree in medicine.  He spent two years at Gustavus Adolphus College, four years at the University of Minnesota medical school, and one year as an intern at City and County Hospital of St. Paul.  He received his B.S. in 1914 and his M.D. in 1915.  He moved to Duluth, Minnesota where he was commissioned as captain in the medical corps of the U.S. Army.  He served in France as regimental surgeon to the 125^th Field Artillery and was promoted to major.  After returning to Duluth, he married Ruth Taylor in 1922 and they had four sons.  He was Chief of Staff of all three hospitals in Duluth and in 1934 Governor Floyd Olson appointed him to the Minnesota State Board of Medical Examiners, where he served for 33 years.  He retired in 1962 and died in 1972.

Edla Wilhemina Magney was born 27 November 1888 in Wisconsin.  She attended the School of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College.  She took piano and organ lessons in Duluth, Minnesota and was the organist and choir director for two churches there.  She then spent two years at the Lutheran Bible Institute in St. Paul and graduated with the first class in 1921.  During her time there, she worked as the organist and choir director at Arlington Hills Lutheran Church in St. Paul.  While there she became their parish worker, the first in the Augustana Synod.  She moved to Chicago in 1924 and worked as an organist and choir director for 13 years, then spent the next 21 years serving churches in Washington state.  She retired in 1957 and moved back to Minnesota.  She died during 1980.
