On this page you’ll find deadlines and information about applying for Curriculum Committee approval for new courses, general education designations, and graduation requirement designations.

Course Proposal Process

You can find a guide to the new course proposal here. . If you intend to submit a course proposal in Fall 2024, please attend one of the workshops hosted by the Provost’s Office.

You can use the new proposal from to submit the the following types of proposals:

  • New catalog courses (and accompanying general education or graduation requirement designations)
  • Liberal Arts Perspectives designation if other than the default (ARTSC, HBSI, HUMN, NTSCI, RSP)
  • Living in the World and Writing Designations (if other than the default): GLAFC, USIDG, QUANT, WRITL, WRITD)
  • First-Term Seminar
  • Challenge Capstone Seminar
  • Any substantially revised course (See definition of a minor vs. substantative course change.)
  • A change in course level
  • A proposal for a 3+2 course

Please note that the course proposal has changed to reflect changes to the curriculum approved by the faculty in October 2023. 

In preparing your proposal, you may find it helpful to review student learning outcomes for the institution, departments, programs, general education distribution areas, and graduation requirement designations, all of which are available on the Assessment webpage. The online proposal form below is designed to guide you through the necessary questions as you make selections. It will automatically save your responses for up to one week as long as you use the same computer and browser. This does not work if you use incognito windows. To avoid losing your work, it is recommended you copy and paste your long answers in a separate word document for safe keeping. The only way to submit a course proposal is through the online form and it is best to work using the online format as described above

Fall 2024:
  • January 5 (Preferred deadline)
  • February 19, 2024 (Final Deadline)
The Gustavus Challenge Curriculum

All students must complete the following genearl education requirements (a total of 10-12 courses or 40-48 semester credits):

  • Foundation and Integration: 2 Courses (1 FTS, 1 Challenge Seminar)
  • Liberal Arts Perspectives: 5 Courses (1 Arts, 1 Human Behavior and Social Institutions, 1 Humanities, 1 Natural Science, 1 Religious, Philosophical, and Ethical Thought)
  • Living in the World: 3-5 Courses (1 Quantitative and Analytical Reasoning, 1 U.S. Identities and Difference, 1 Global Affairs and Cultures, 0-2 Non-English Language–must have one college-level non-English language course and equivalency through the second semester)
  • Students may earn a digital writing credential by completing 4 WRITL and/or WRITD designated courses
