About the DepartmentDepartment of Psychological Science

Psychological science challenges generalizations, encourages objectivity, and provides a methodology that can be used to analyze and synthesize propositions about behavior. The Psychological Science major at Gustavus is intended to introduce students to the factual base that constitutes what is known about behavior in humans and other organisms, and to the theoretical approaches used to organize and explain these observations. The major requires a minimum of 10 courses in the Psychological Science Department that will be planned between a student and faculty advisor to achieve breadth and depth that is appropriate for the student's goals.

Psychological Science Department Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Psychological Science is to foster in students an understanding and appreciation of the scientific approach to describing and explaining behavior and mental processes. To this end, faculty members strive to provide opportunities for students to challenge generalizations, engage in objective thinking and observation, and employ the research methods necessary to establish a more complete understanding of mind and behavior. Throughout the program, students are introduced to theoretical explanations and the associated empirical evidence and research methods employed to establish and evaluate them. We expect that the knowledge and skills that students develop will serve them well as they consider their responsibilities to society and their role in the world.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

The Psychological Science Department is committed to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all areas of our Department. We support members of underrepresented groups in their learning goals, and we eschew prejudice and discrimination in all aspects of our work. As a discipline we are uniquely situated and intentional in conducting research and educating students on theories and research related to bias.
