Overview

Gustavus physics develops students in a fun and safe environment where learning can fluorish. We are very intentional about building community between classmates, all majors, and faculty. Built through collaborative work and learning, students build problem solving skills that contribute to their continued success after graduation.

Student / Faculty Interaction

Professors in the physics department believe all their students are able to succeed, and are there to help students through all phases of college life. Professors build relationships with their students both in and out of the classroom, through research opportunities, and open office hours. Professors meet students at their level and prepare them for their chosen career in physics, engineering, or other fields.

Nationally Recognized Program

  • For the past ten years, Gustavus has been in the top 15 liberal-arts institutions nationally in production of the number of majors (currently 11th, source: annual AIP summary).
  • For the past ten years, Gustavus has been among the top 10 liberal-arts institutions nationally as the baccalaureate origin of physics PhDs (currently 5th, source: National Science Foundation WebCASPAR database).

The figure below shows the number of students who received physics degrees from Gustavus and the number who continued directly (immediately after graduation) to graduate school in physics or engineering.

Nearly all of the students attending graduate school did so at no cost through graduate teaching or research assistant fellowships.
