The Gustavus Music Colloquium SeriesIncluding Concert and Recital Attendance Requirements

Section Contents

Purpose

The purpose of the Department of Music Colloquium Series is to offer presentations and performances that will significantly develop the art of music listening in our music majors and explore the role and responsibility of the listener in “the holy triangle of composer, performer, listener – Britten”

The Colloquium Series

The on-campus CS events are open for anyone to attend.

For the scholarly community of music majors, listening is not a passive process. It is an art that requires acute aural skill development and substantial knowledge of the art form. The Colloquium Series is offered by the Music Department as a scholars’ forum for the examination of the various aspects of this essential element in the music major’s musicianship. Faculty, guest artists, visiting scholars, or students will address a variety of topics, most often in a pre-concert format that will enhance the listening experience of a cited performance. The greater Saint Peter community is also invited to attend.

CS Requirements of the Music Major

  1. Declared Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Music Majors are required to attend 7 CS events each semester in residence. Most CS events will have a cited performance and in this case the major is required to attend both the CS and the cited performance.
    1. A CS and a cited performance will satisfy a CS and a Concert/Recital Attendance requirement. A CS without a cited performance only counts as a CS.
    2. Dr. Wang will have an attendance sheet at the performance site for majors to sign. The Master Record will be kept in the Music Office. If a student has an unavoidable conflict with attending the performance related to the CS, the student shall see Dr. Wang for an excused absence.
    3. Majors may see Dr. Wang for pre-approval to attend an off-campus event and receive credit for a CS.
    4. Students who perform on a small portion of a CS concert or recital and spend the bulk of their time as an audience member, may contact Dr. Wang in advance for possible credit.
  2. In addition, Majors shall choose one CS event with a performance each semester and write a 2-3 page, 12 font, double-spaced reflective paper. Comments will include the cited performance. Students will turn the paper into Dr, Wang no later than two weeks before the end of the semester. The paper may be returned for a rewrite
  3. Grading – Students who do not fulfill the requirement will have their final lesson grade lowered accordingly by one letter grade increment (e.g. A- to B+) per missing CS.
  4. Note - The Concert/Recital Attendance requirement and other Area specific requirements are in addition to the CS requirement

Additional Concert and Recital Requirements

  1. Requirement - All students registered for private lessons are required to attend 7 concerts or recitals (CRs) as an audience member each semester in residence. (Please contact your instructor in advance about credit if you perform on a small portion of a concert or recital and spend the bulk of your time in the audience.)
  2. Attendance Record - The student’s lesson instructor maintains the attendance record. The student will turn in a program to receive credit for attendance.
  3. Grading - Students who do not fulfill the CR requirement will have their final lesson grade lowered accordingly by one letter grade increment (e.g. A- to B+) per missing C.
  4. CS for Non-Majors - Non-majors who attend a Music Major CS event and the cited performance will receive credit for two CRs. The student will submit a performance program and the hand out from the CS.
  5. Music Majors - Music Majors may use the performance of a CS Event to count for a CR credit.
  6. Area Requirements – Specific Area related requirements are in addition to the CR requirement.
  7. CR Credit Off Campus – contact your lesson instructor ahead of time for possible credit.

Check the Fine Arts Calendar for on-campus events to attend.

SPRING 2021

Tuesday, January 19th, 7:00-9:00PM CT, A special January Music Department Colloquium organized by the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. Throughout January Term, and as a part of our 2021 "Virtual Tour," GWO is collaborating on music from 5 film scores in exploration of the theme, "Heroes: Facing Adversity and Destiny." As part of our curriculum for the JT course, members of GWO are watching the films, studying/performing the scores, and reflecting and writing about the characters and the music. One such film is Lawrence Kasdan's Western-genre masterpiece, "Silverado" (1985) with music by Bruce Broughton. Composer Bruce Broughton, one of the most prolific living Hollywood composers/conductors/orchestrators of film and television music, will be Zooming with GWO as a guest artist.
