Tips for Finding an Internship
- Talk to someone in the field: To get a feel for what kind of internship you should be applying for, it’s important to talk to someone who’s worked in the field you would like to make your career in. This can include a professor, academic advisor, a family friend, or someone in your personal network. Talking to someone with experience in the field can provide valuable insight and be very helpful in finding what's right for you.
- Seek out a valuable experience: Before you begin your internship search, you should have in mind some career goals. Will this opportunity allow you to grow and get a useful experience? Will it get you closer to your career goals, or expose you to a potential career? These are important questions to keep in mind when searching for an internship.
- Stay on top of deadlines: Internships are not always open year-round, so keep on eye on recruiting times, submission deadlines, etc.
- Take advantage of college resources: Gustavus offers a variety of resources to help students find internships, work on resumes, prepare for interviews, etc. The staff at the career center is more than happy to help you find and prepare for future jobs and internships!
- Know the company: Before applying or having an interview, make sure you do research on the company itself. Go to its website and read everything you can to educate yourself. It’s important to show that you’re up to date on the company’s current initiatives, so read through whatever you can online to find out even more about the company, it’s direction, and what its strengths are.
