Gustavus Jazz Ensemble

The Gustavus Jazz Ensemble is the premier 21-member concert jazz ensemble at Gustavus Adolphus College. The group is supportive and encouraging of each other as they push themselves to grow and create excellent music together.

The group performs regularly on campus, including being the student-favorite feature at Midnight Express, the end of the semester study break party.

In addition to the semester concerts on-campus, the group tours annually and often performs at regional jazz festivals.

Founded in 1970 by Dr. Mark Lammers, the Gustavus Jazz program has a long history of excellence throughout the state of Minnesota and northern midwest. Dr. Steve Wright continued building upon the program during the 1990s and early 2000s by taking the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band on multiple national tours, recording two CDs, performing at major conferences, and being featured on Prairie Home Companion

In more recent years, the jazz program has continued its evolution by Dr. Dave Stamps. With a focus on community, cultural/historical awareness, and creativity, the jazz program began a more vibrant touring profile. The Gustavus Jazz Ensemble has won the College Big Band Division at the prestigious Eau Claire Jazz Festival. The group has toured internationally in Greece, Macedonia, Singapore, and Malaysia. The Gustavus Jazz Ensemble will be traveling to Scotland & Ireland in May of 2025 alongside the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra.
