Continuing Education Lectures at Gustavus

The public is invited to the following continuing education events at Gustavus Adolphus College in the Melva Lind Interpretive Center:

  • Gretchen Koehler, professor emeritus of health and exercise science, will present “T’ai Chi Chuan” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14. Participants will learn about the soft martial arts of T’ai Chi Chuan and the western version of T’ai Chi Chih.
  • Dick Fuller, professor emeritus of physics, will present “Manhattan Project — Revisited” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21. Fuller will bring a historical perspective of the project that developed the atomic bomb and its impact on some of the scientists who made it possible.
  • Dick Martin, professor of psychology, and Tim Robinson, Nobel Conference director and professor of psychology, will give a preview of the 40th Nobel Conference, “The Science of Aging,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28. This year’s Nobel Conference will focus on the emerging science of gerontology. Current research is causing reevaluation of attitudes, opportunities, and challenges related to aging in the 21st century.

These events are open to the public; pre-registration is required. Cost is $5, and includes coffee and dessert. Register at the office of St. Peter Community and Family Education, Suite 207, 600 S. Fifth St., St. Peter, MN 56082. Office hours are 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday. For more information, call (507) 934-3048 and press zero for the operator. These events are Gustavus Adolphus College continuing education programs done in cooperation with the St. Peter Community and Family Education programs.

John Pomfret is the author of <i>Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China.</i>Reading in Common Author John Pomfret Will Visit Campus

Gustavus Adolphus College will welcome author John Pomfret to campus Monday, Sept. 15. Pomfret, the author of this year’s Reading in Common book, Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China, will speak at 7 p.m. in Christ Chapel.
