Confer Professor of Entrepreneurship and Visiting Assistant Professor in Economics and Management

Tom Clement, PhD - I was born and raised in Grand Forks, ND, the son of a self-made, small business owner. My father co-owned a contracting company and working for him growing up would pay personal dividends later in life. I graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1995 with a bachelor of science in industrial technology. Soon after, I started my first company, a franchise power sports dealership. I began as a Yamaha dealer and eventually added Kawasaki and Polaris. In 2002 I had the opportunity to sell the store and I went back to UND to pursue an MBA. UND asked me to teach an entrepreneurial finance class and I experienced intense joy and satisfaction being in the classroom; cementing my second major career choice. I spent 14 years at UND and have taught almost every business discipline, but my primary areas are accounting and entrepreneurship. I earned my PhD in 2013 and have published papers in entrepreneurship and business journals. Tapping into my contracting background, I built my first home in 1998 and have since built or remodeled four more, tackling a majority of the tasks myself. My wife and I recently bought a house to remodel and resell in Mankato and that will be my summer 2019 project. My wife, Jeanie, and I have four children and one grandchild that we are very proud of. My other hobbies include, motorcycling, watching sports (especially college basketball), woodworking, and pretty much anything involving tools.
