Henry MacCarthyFaculty

Henry MacCarthy joined the Department of Theatre and Dance at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2007. He completed undergraduate studies in performance at the National School for the Performing Arts in Caracas, Venezuela. After working several years as an actor he returned to the U.S. to attend Indiana University’s graduate program in opera directing. He has been part of the directing staff of several companies including Houston Grand Opera, Baltimore Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Opera North, and most recently Opera Omaha, where he directed a new production of Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel." Other professional engagements include the Latin American premiere of "Sweeney Todd" in Caracas, Venezuela and the premiere in Minnesota of Stephen Dolginoff's musical "Thrill Me: the Story of Leopold & Loeb" at the Lowry Lab in St. Paul. In addition to Gustavus he has directed  college productions at Johns Hopkins University and Ohio University, where he obtained a Ph.D. in theatre and music. He was visiting Professor at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan during fall 2014, where he taught Physical Theatre.
