2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

Mixed Blood Theatre Company performed Dr. King’s Dream: A Biography of Martin Luther King Jr. on January 21, 2008 as part of the college’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations.

Mixed Blood Theatre Company is based in Minneapolis and has many culturally-specific theatrical productions that tour hundreds of schools, community centers, theaters, and workplaces across the country. The company’s shows fill a void in the curricula of schools, provide and portray role models of color, and demonstrate the possibilities of live theater as a voice for the unheard and as an instrument of change.

Earlier in the day, 1972 alumnus and current Superintendent of Minneapolis Schools Dr. Bill Green delivered the homily at daily chapel. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in history at Gustavus, Green went on to earn a master’s degree in educational psychology, a doctorate in education, and a juris doctorate from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.  Green is Associate Professor of History at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He also serves as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.

In addition, in March Dr. David Cortright of the Fourth Freedom Forum presented a lecture, "Nonviolence for an Age of Terrorism."
