JOB SUMMARY: The Fleet & Equipment Maintenance Technician oversees the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of the campus grounds vehicle and equipment fleet. This role oversees preventative maintenance programs, coordinates equipment repairs, supports grounds operations, and supervises assigned staff and student workers. The supervisor ensures equipment reliability, safe operation, and efficient use of campus resources to support year-round grounds and facilities operations.

Employment Type: Full-time (1.0 FTE), Non-Exempt (Hourly), Benefits-Eligible

Pay Range: $26.00 - $31.00 per hour

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fleet & Equipment Management

  • Develop and manage a preventative maintenance program for all campus vehicles and equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain equipment including:
    • Trucks and utility vehicles
    • Tractors and loaders
    • Mowers and turf equipment
    • Snow removal equipment
    • Grounds maintenance tools
  • Maintain accurate service records, inspection logs, and maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor equipment performance and recommend replacement or upgrades when needed.
  • Coordinate outside repair services and vendor support when required.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards.

Operations Support

  • Prepare equipment for seasonal operations including mowing, landscaping, and snow removal.
  • Ensure all equipment is safe, functional, and available to meet daily grounds operations.
  • Assist in planning equipment usage to support campus maintenance schedules.
  • Support campus vehicle dispatch when requested.

Supervision & Team Coordination

  • Coordinate maintenance priorities with the Grounds Supervisor and grounds team.
  • Train staff on safe equipment operation and preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Assist in scheduling work assignments and shop workflow, along with day-to-day direction for assigned grounds shop staff and student workers.

Procurement & Inventory

  • Research and recommend equipment purchases.
  • Order parts, tools, and supplies required for equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain shop inventory and ensure proper storage of materials.
  • Evaluate equipment lifecycle and provide recommendations for replacement planning.

Shop Operations & Safety

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized maintenance shop.
  • Follow institutional safety standards and applicable regulations.
  • Promote safe equipment use and proper maintenance procedures.
  • Assist with campus emergency response activities when needed.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and materials as needed for campus operations.
  • Support campus events and seasonal projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Prerequisites

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in vehicle/equipment maintenance or mechanical repair.
  • Experience maintaining small engines and facilities equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical and hydraulic issues.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Technical or vocational training in automotive, diesel, or equipment repair, preferred.
  • Experience with turf or municipal equipment maintenance preferred.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & EXPECTATIONS:

  • Must be available for emergency repairs.
  • Overtime is necessary at various times of the year.
  • Exposure to outside weather conditions year-round.
  • Exposure to noise, machinery, and maintenance shop environments.
  • Works on ladders, scaffolds and roofs.
  • Lifting up to 75lbs and physical work including lifting, bending, and operating equipment.
