JOB SUMMARY: The Accounting Manager is a critical technical accounting leader within the Finance team, acting as the College’s primary tax expert and audit coordinator. This is an individual contributor role with the potential to supervise 1–2 staff members. You will ensure the integrity of financial data, maintain institutional compliance, and serve as a key resource for complex tax and gift reporting. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys "owning" the compliance calendar and managing complex multi-state requirements.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $90,000

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and file Federal Form 990 and 990-T.
  • Manage incidental tax filings, including Sales and Use tax, MinnesotaCare tax, and Nonresident Entertainer tax.
  • Direct and maintain the College’s charitable solicitation registrations and business filings in all 50 states. Ensure the College remains in good standing nationwide by tracking varying state deadlines, renewal requirements, and regulatory changes.
  • Direct the coordination of the annual financial statement audit and various compliance audits. Lead the "Prepared by Client" (PBC) process and act as the primary liaison for external auditors.
  • Support the Controller and the broader Finance team in the execution of the month-end close and year-end accounting activities. This includes preparing complex reconciliations, analyzing general ledger activity, and ensuring accurate financial reporting.
  • Lead the financial reporting for non-cash gifts, including stock gift processing, verifying valuations, and ensuring compliance with IRS Form 8283 and 8282 requirements for donor and donee reporting.
  • Coordinate tax reporting for beneficiaries of the College’s life income and split-interest gifts. Ensure accuracy and timely distribution of all required tax documentation.
  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert on state and federal laws affecting the College’s financial processes. Provide research and implementation plans for new regulatory requirements across all jurisdictions.
  • Provide mentorship and daily oversight for 1–2 accounting staff members, fostering professional growth and ensuring accuracy in their respective workflows.
  • Monitor cashflow, ensuring adequate reserves and the optimal investment of the idle funds.

Prerequisites

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Must be well-organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to meet strict regulatory deadlines.
  • Proven strong research skills with the ability to interpret and apply complex tax codes and multi-state laws.
  • An independent self-starter who is comfortable with uncertainty and capable of building or refining new processes with minimal direction.
  • Experience identifying and implementing process improvements.
  • Strong Excel skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Prior experience in a Higher Education setting.
  • Direct experience preparing or managing IRS Form 990 and 990-T filings.
  • Experience coordinating annual financial statement audits.
