Description

Gustavus Adolphus College (Saint Peter, Minn.), a nationally ranked liberal arts college, is seeking a Director of Risk, Insurance, and Compliance.  The individual in this position will be a collaborative leader with a track record of success in risk management and insurance, with a highly relational approach, outstanding communication skills, self-confidence balanced with humility, integrity of the highest order, and a strong work ethic.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis, the Director of Risk, Insurance, and Compliance is responsible for: 

Risk Management

  • Serve as a consultant to campus partners, reviewing contract terms, and claims. Collaborate with key stakeholders (e.g., Chemical Hygiene Officer, Campus Safety, Facilities Management, Athletics, Campus Activities, etc.) to identify opportunities for loss prevention.
  • Create, communicate, and train campus constituents on new and existing policy and protocol.
  • Budget development and ongoing financial management of insurance programs.
  • Complete the annual insurance renewal process.
  • Review insurance quotes against expiring programs and make recommendations based on findings and understanding of college risks.
  • Oversee insurance claims to ensure timely and efficient management.
  • Provide certificates-of-insurance or other insurance support services as needed and requested.

Environmental Health and Safety 

  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies to acquire and maintain permits and other regulatory documentation for the College.  
  • Assists with laboratory safety programs acting as the campus Radiation Safety Officer on campus to provide the expertise and technical knowledge for license renewal.
  • Chair of the campus-wide safety committee. 
  • Develop and maintain a measurement system to track EH&S performance metrics (number of safety incidents, accidents etc.). Compile, review, analyze and interpret this data and communicate with stakeholders. Oversee regulatory compliance, in collaboration with other College departments.
  • Manage required facility inspections, program audits, and other related inspections by regulatory agencies having jurisdiction (i.e., MNOSHA, EPA, State Fire Marshal, MDH, MPCA, etc.).
  • Coordinate response efforts related to campus emergencies, participate in emergency management teams, and serve as Safety Officer within the campus emergency management structure.

Worker’s Compensation 

  • Evaluate and follow-up initial injury report with department leaders, supervisors, and managers.
  • Initiate and manage all workers compensation claims, including litigation.
  • Input injury-log information, publish and post annual OSHA 300A form.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Maintain a current and comprehensive knowledge of regulatory and EHS and safety standards, best practices, and regulations; identify new and emerging regulatory requirements. 
  • Provide insight, guidance, advice, and leadership to ensure safety of the campus populus.
  • Experience developing and implementing a strong customer service approach.
  • Analyze and interpret technical documents or regulations, determine their applicability, and provide professional guidance to achieve compliance.
  • Effectively organize and present information, data, ideas, and concepts in written, presentation, and oral format.
  • Foster teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere while effectively working within a diverse population.

Prerequisites

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an area related to risk management, environmental science/health, environmental, safety, occupational safety, or insurance.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety sciences, chemical process safety, and industrial hygiene.
  • Experience developing effective programing around minimizing campus risk.
  • Independent judgment, collaborative leadership, and strong problem-solving capabilities and the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to work successfully with a variety of individuals and groups across organizational lines.
  • Five (5) plus years of experience relevant to the trade.
  • Position may require work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals, or infectious agents are present.
  • Frequent standing, sitting, talking, hearing, walking, occasional reaching, climbing, balancing, and handling objects with hands. Lifting objects up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to be flexible with daily schedule, volume of work, and adheres to meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to see information in print and/or electronic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Risk Management, Environmental Health & Safety or a directly related field.
  • Designation as a Board-certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) and or Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
  • Risk Management designations (CRMP, ARM, etc.).
  • Experience in the management of a broad spectrum of environmental health and safety programs typical of a college or university, or other large-scale, multi-facility complex organization.
