Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time Area Coordinator with Residential Life. This is an 10-month position and has a start date of August 1st.

Gustavus Adolphus College is a private liberal arts college in Saint Peter, Minn., that prepares over 2,200 undergraduates for lives of leadership, service, and lifelong learning. Fully accredited and known for its strong science, writing, music, athletics, study-away, and service-learning programs, Gustavus hosts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and is internationally recognized for its annual Nobel Conference.

This position serves on the Residential Life team (along with the Director, two Assistant Directors, and two additional Area Coordinators) to coordinate aspects of a residential area on campus (2-3 buildings, 500-700 residents, 14-18 student staff members) and support all aspects of the residential experience at Gustavus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate, support, and participate in the mission of the College by assisting in providing an environment within the residence halls conducive to academic achievement.

  • Assist with students' transition through college life and to their self-development to the extent that each understands and evaluates his/her own purpose for being in college.

  • Supervise, administer and evaluate the Collegiate Fellow staff and programs in an assigned area of responsibility.

  • Advise, administer and evaluate the Hall Council leadership program in an assigned area of responsibility.

  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of central office responsibilities including:  Residential Learning Plan; Hall Council development; Collegiate Fellow selection; Room Selection; etc.

  • Serve as a resource for students in academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular areas; to provide program and staff support for proper recognition and referral of students' personal problems.

  • Facilitate (via coordination with Collegiate Fellows) the development of programs and strategies aligned with the Residential Learning Plan that will assist students in developing a sense of belonging, acquiring knowledge, developing integrity and assuming self-responsibility.

  • Coordinate the administrative functions of the residence halls within area of responsibility.

  • Interpret college objectives, policies, rules and regulations to students and to interpret student attitudes, opinions and actions to appropriate college officials.  

  • Assist in the formation of policies that govern residential life; to assist students in understanding policies established for community living; to work with staff members in dealing with inappropriate behavior they encounter and in developing programs to address those problems; and to adjudicate cases through the campus conduct process.

  • Promote the safety of students, student property and the property of the College.

  • Participate in campus-wide on-call rotation; to arrange absences with the Director of Residential Life; to attend staff meetings called by the Director or Dean of Students; to represent the College in dealing with students, parents and visitors to the halls.

  • All other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.

  • Experience working in a residential life program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in college student  personnel or related program.

  • Experience at a liberal arts institution.

Working Environment:

  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

  • Evening and weekend commitments required.

  • This is a live on position.
