Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time (6/7) one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures to begin September 1, 2019.

The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is committed to leading students to intercultural competence by developing a deep understanding and appreciation for language, culture, and literature. The Spanish section encourages students to respect and value the socioeconomic and cultural differences present in our globalized society and to become critical thinkers. Our curriculum offers students hands-on experience in Spanish-speaking communities at home and abroad, enabling them to become translingually and transculturally competent as they seek to achieve their goals.

Major/Essential Functions: The annual teaching assignment will be 6 courses. Primary teaching responsibilities will include teaching four elementary language courses, two upper division linguistics courses.

Prerequisites

Minimum Qualifications:

  •  PhD in in Spanish linguistics; we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and who will complete their degree by September 1, 2019;
  • Prior experience in teaching elementary language courses, as well as linguistics and advanced grammar courses;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching;
  • A commitment to undergraduate teaching and student advising; and
  •  Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Content-Based Language Instruction; and
  • Experience incorporating community-based learning into language instruction.
