Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time, one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies to begin September 1, 2019.

Major/Essential Functions: The annual teaching assignment will be seven courses, one of which may be a one-month January Term experiential course determined by the candidate and appropriate to the candidate’s expertise. Primary teaching responsibilities will include Public Discourse and Rhetorical Criticism. We particularly invite applications from candidates with additional expertise in one or more of the following areas: dialogue, deliberation, health communication, communicating science, conflict resolution, and/or media studies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in communication studies (or a related field); we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status;
  •  Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching;
  • A commitment to undergraduate teaching and student advising;
  • Ability to teach Rhetorical Criticism and Public Discourse, the department's innovative foundational civic engagement course; and
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching a variety of communication studies courses;
  •  Experience conducting publicly-engaged teaching and scholarship; and
  • Experience and interest in developing and implementing curricula that address issues of diversity.
