Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time two-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of History to begin September 1, 2019.

The Gustavus history department offers a dynamic undergraduate liberal arts program that emphasizes global history, the role of historically underrepresented and marginalized groups, and a capstone experience where seniors pursue independent research projects. The faculty are actively engaged in research and contribute widely to campus interdisciplinary programs.

Major/Essential Functions: The annual teaching assignment will be six or seven courses, one of which may be a one-month January Term experiential course determined by the candidate and appropriate to the candidate’s expertise. Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory courses and intermediate courses in Early Modern Europe and world history, and upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. These courses will fulfill both department and/or general education requirements.

Finalists will be asked to submit syllabi, writing prompts for assignments, teaching evaluations, and transcripts (scanned copies acceptable). The committee will conduct reference checks prior to deciding the candidates to bring to campus. Incomplete applications will not be considered by the search committee.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Early Modern European history by September 1, 2019
  • Ability to teach courses in Early Modern Europe and world history
  • Prior teaching experience
  • A commitment to undergraduate teaching and student mentoring
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Early Modern European History at time of application
  • Expertise and teaching ability in Early Modern Europe in connection with other regions of the world, preferably Africa, Asia, or the Islamic world
  • Expertise and teaching ability in Early Modern religions
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in engaged teaching
  • Experience teaching entry, intermediate, and advanced level courses
  • Experience advising student research projects in the capstone or independent research project
